NEF RAW files unsupported

Recommended Posts

Opening Nikon raw files from a D5300 or D3400 via import from photos on iPad fails every time with unsupported message.  This has always worked prior to the update and they are a format supported by the Apple library.

Did you edit them or alter them in iPhoto before opening them in affinity photo? if you did then u get this error. or did you open them in affinity  directly after import without touching them in iphoto

Directly after importing with no editing in anything. I just imported one to check and it refuses to load with the same message.  JPEGs load fine.

I now have this problem also.

Trying to 'open from photos' Sony JPEG/RAW files (which have always opened before) brings up the 'Failed to open file' dialogue box.

JPEGS still open fine.

Help!

I just downloaded a raw sample from https://www.rawsamples.ch/index.php/en/nikon choosing Nikon D5300.

Opened in AP 1.8 using Open from Cloud and browsing to Safari Download. Opened fine for me.

So you’re suggesting it is only an issue if opening from photos?  Annoying if so as that is the standard way of accessing them. There seems to be quite a few with the issue including different types of RAW files from other manufacturers. Maybe someone else can try it via that route as can’t currently?

Looks like it is just from photos.  I just took a test shot, copied raw file from sd card to iCloud using files app and I can then load it from there into AP. Trying to import from photos fails every time.

Not great but at least it’s a workaround for now.

Just tried this, and it's true the file can be opened using 'Import from Cloud' whereas is can't be opened using 'Import from photos. BUT as far as I can see, the file imported from Cloud in this way is no longer in RAW format, which defeats the point of the work-around.

So for example, this is the Sony JPEG/RAW (.awr) file opened in Darkroom, which shows size as 20.9mb.

And here is a shot showing the same file exported from Photos into the Cloud, then imported into Affinity Photo using the 'Import from Cloud' function - now only 5.6mb. I suspect this may be happening with the other workaround suggested elsewhere on the forum.

p.s. Is there any way of checking in Affinity Photo the size and format of the file, as with the 'Information' facility in Darkroom, above? If not, how do you know whether it is RAW?

If it is only RAW when the file opens in Developer, and says RAW (which is what used to happen when opening from Photos), then none of the work-arounds work - they all succeed in opening the file only because it is no longer RAW!

If you’ve imported into photos then it will have imported the jpeg and the raw but if you move that to iCloud it copies only the jpeg and I can’t see how you get to the raw. To get the raw file over you need to copy it directly from the sd card to iCloud using files. You’ll know it is the raw as it’ll be bigger and it’ll show RAW in the top left like the duck pic above.

That's fine going forward, but not much use for the many RAW files already imported into Photos where originals of no longer exist on SD card.

Yep they’ll need to fix it. I do wonder whether it is selecting the wrong one of the two files and trying to load the jpeg as RAW in error. That might account for the behaviour.

Hopefully someone from the developer will acknowledge at some point......

Hi all—can you please attach some samples that are failing to open. I use the same site DM1 linked to for most of my raw samples and so far none of them are failing to open.

There was an issue reported against builds 1.8.0.165/166 but it was closed as fixed against build .168 so I really could do with the samples as I may need to reopen this bug. Thank you.

I can try and upload a RAW file and it's corresponding JPEG later but as I said above, I don't think it is the file that is the issue, it is the route that it is taking - i.e via the import process into PHOTOS  app on iPad.  AP obviously has no issue with the RAW files themselves if they are loading directly from iCloud and opening fine.

The location (https://www.rawsamples.ch/index.php/en/nikon ) mentioned above would probably give you a file to try but I suspect it might only be an issue if PHOTOS imports the NEF and JPEG file at the same time which appears to be the default behavior when the camera is outputting RAW+JPEG.

Certainly, it would be interesting to know what the result is if the camera is set to RAW only,  If there is no corresponding (they're named the same apart from the suffix) JPEG file, will it load from PHOTOS?  If so then I suspect it is trying to load picturename.jpg when it should be picking picturename.nef - that would explain it thinking it is the wrong format?

Posted (edited)

To be clear, this is the workflow test case that is failing for me.  I assume it is the same for the others:

Take a picture in Raw+JPEG on a Nikon camera - resulting in two indentically named files suffixed .nef and .jpeg.
Import into PHOTOS app on iPad directly from the SD card - resulting in a single entry (that you can see) in PHOTOS.
Open AP and choose 'Import from Photos' option - which has always loaded the RAW (NEF) file by default.

If you test a RAW file by any other method I suspect it will open as we proved via iCloud above.

Yes! As posted on the Sony/.awr thread (the glitch must have something to do with the process for opening RAW+JPEG files, as it does not occur with RAW only):

"OK so I've just tried two different processes: (1) took new photo on Sony RX100iii in RAW+JPEG format; (2) took new photo on same camera in RAW format.

(2) Imported correctly into Affinity Photo, showing as RAW and opening in Develop Persona. (1) (JPEG+RAW) failed to import, showing the 'Failed to open file' dialogue box.

So no help in opening files where photos are in JPEG+RAW, as is the case with most of my photos going back some years."

Good to know there is a fix in place now.  Do we have an idea of the release schedule for the next build with that in?

Otherwise, does anyone know of a way to access the RAW and JPEG files imported into the photos app directly?  I assume they are sandboxed in the app as I can't seem to get to them in the files app.  If I can access them then I can either remove the JPEG or move the RAW as a workaround.

Ah the joys of IOS.......

Give Documents (by Readdle)  a try. It can access photo library.

EDIT  After testing it’s possible to access the raw in photo library using Documents, and move it then share to APbut it still only opens the jpg associated with the raw.  The AP beta accesses Photo library directly and opens raw.

Raw files have a larger format even jpg won't. NEF files unprocessed pictures of high quality as perceived by the camera sensor. Shooting in NEF format gives liberty to photographers to enhance and creatively play with the images in the post-editing stage.

Naturally losing such images can be seriously annoying.

I had also lost your Nikon RAW files in NEF format due to corruption, and looking for ways to get back correct photos, here we bring in the best methods to repair corrupt RAW Nikon NEF files.
