French Dictionnary for fr-CA

Hi,

Thank you for that amazing tool Preflight is.

However, I have a problem with it. My Mac OS X language parameter is "français - Canada". With Spelling activated in the preflight, i get the message "Missing dictionnary for language (fr-CA)".

I have read topic "[FAQ] How do I add additional Dictionaries to Affinity Publisher?" but i can't find any fr-CA dictionnary to install (on Catalina OS)...

Is that possible to just duplicate some files from fr-FR and rename them in fr-CA ? If yes can anyone tell me which files ?

It might work to copy/rename the standard French files, and couldn't hurt. I don't find any Hunspell dictionaries for fr_CA, either.

You would need fr_FR.dic and fr_FR.aff from your Mac spelling directories, and (probably) hyph_fr_FR.dic from one of the Affinity libraries (the FAQ for installing dictionaries should tell you where to look). Just copy them to the appropriate spot, and rename changing the "FR" to "CA", restart Publisher, and see what happens.

There have been some issues reported concerning spelling on Mac since 1.8 came out, including in English. Yours seems a little different (namely the "missing dictionary" error), but I think it could be a different symptom of the same problem. For the moment, if I were you, I would not be concerned that it is a problem with your install or settings, but rather an issue that should be resolved by Serif.

Also, I wonder whether a fr-CA dictionary would be of much advantage over standard French. I know of course that there are a lot of unique colloquial terms in Quebec French versus the French of France, as well as differences of phrases and even grammar, just as there are differences in American English versus British English. However, in the matter of spelling, I don't think you have the issue where common words shared in both varieties are spelled differently as we do in the English varieties, such as color/colour, theater/theatre, traveling/travelling, focusing/focussing, aluminum/aluminium. Because words that are shared in more than one variety of French are spelled consistently, I would suppose that a sufficiently comprehensive single French dictionary could effectively cover many varieties. The bigger issue regarding French spelling would be whether to choose pre- or post-spelling reform. Or maybe I am mistaken, If so, please do correct me—I have a particular interest in this subject.

Hi @walt.farrell, hi @garrettm30,

Thanks a lot for your answers and sorry for the delay, I had some others "emergencies" 😬.

I agree with you, @garrettm30, i can easily copy the fr_FR file and rename it fr_CA, specially as most of my customers are from ... France 🙂

But the difficulty was to find this fr_FR.dic and fr_FR.aff files to copy. I did not find them on my computer (Mac OS X Catalina 10.15.4) as mentionned in the FAQ. So I took a look Qwant (you know, this new privacy-Google ;) ) and found some there.

I installed them, and everything work great now.

So the question now is, "How to make sure thoses files are "official" - or kind of. Have you any better sources?
