How about a Smithsonian Open Access Stock Panel?

Well there seems to be an API, bit niche perhaps. I think this belongs in the suggestions forum.

Not so sure that it is so niche as to not be worth persuing...  several million entries and much of the content available there is licensed CC0 (effectively public domain); with a lot of photos of historic objects and paintings I would imagine quite a few users would find it useful to have access to that from Publisher in particular...

But does this really represent what users (esp. PRO-Users) are looking for, when using a stock image collection? (Getty, Corbis..)
For e.g. advertising they are looking for mood-Images ("happiness" etc..).
For other purposes they look for generic imagery ("forest", "calm lake" etc.)

Don´t get me wrong: Of course its good to have sources.
But perhaps some more image-sources, even commercial ones, are more useful?
Also keep in mind that free sources are often not multi-lingually indexed (compared to commercial sources..)
What about SVG-sources?

kind regards
Fritz

Granted that this is more narrowly focused than those types of sources, but it is still a significant collection.  Not every user is working in the business/advertising field - we have had people on the forum typesetting bibles, making photo books, working in academia...  once footnotes/endnotes get added we could be seeing a lot more academic users, which may well include people working on reports and other kinds of documents for history classes - or perhaps something going through the history of math, or the history of some other field...?
