Hard Crash When Searching Fonts (v1.8, MacOS 10.15.3)

Recommended Posts

On a new document, I chose the artistic type tool, clicked on the artboard so the cursor was flashing ready for text, I then opened the font-selection dropdown and started typing ‘mon’ to search for a font.
Tried again on relaunch and was not able to reproduce.

I can reproduce this any time.

First I type some text in the document, and then I try to change the font.
When searching in the font list, upon the second character I enter in the search field, Designer crashes. (Photo too, Publisher seems to work fine).

This happens since version 1.8, and I just updated to 1.8.1 and the same bug is still present.

I am on macOS 10.15.3 and both versions come from the Appstore, if that matters.

Hi mediumcheese and Pete123

I've just tried to reproduce this myself using Designer 1.8.1 (and Catalina 10.15.3) and I have been unable to.

Pete123, as this is reproducible 100% for you, could you attach a video showing the steps you are taking please. In addition to that do you have many additional fonts installed and do you use any Font Collection software or do you just use Font Book? Also do you get the crash reporter screen appearing. If so could you also attach a copy of the contents of that please?

Thanks

Hi Sean,

A screencast, as well as the crash log is attached here.

I am using the plain macOS Font Book, as seen in the screencast, with close to 300 fonts installed. This is 1.8.1 (all apps crash for me, photo designer and publisher).

Yesterday, the apps would crash as soon as I started typing in the font list, today it took some effort... so it seems to get better with time :-)

I hope the crash log points to something conclusive.

This is on a 2019 Mac Pro, 12core 3.3Ghz, 48GB ram, Radeon VII GPU

Also having the same issue. Typing font name in menu crashes the app. Seems to be every time now, so I have stopped doing it and I'm scrolling instead, as I need to finish the job!

Running 1.8.1 on Mojave

Can reproduce. The crash report you mention, is that the Apple one or is there an Affinity one somewhere? Let me know details if you want me to send you anything else.

P.S. just over 500 fonts installed, and I use Font Book to manage them (or not manage—that's definitely too many!)

P.P.S. I have found all versions of Designer to be pretty much 100% stable before this issue in 1.8.1.

We have made fixes/improvements to this area (Crash when trying to type into the Font Dropdown) of the program in the latest customer beta. If you would like to try these changes the beta software is available in the forum posts listed below.

The latest beta builds are downloadable from links at the top of each of these beta forum posts.

These betas install parallel, next to the release version (they do not overwrite your release) and so the fixes can be tried in the beta without affecting your normal workflow in the release version.

Once these programs have been through a full beta process the change will be released in a future free 1.8.2 update/patch to all customers.
