What app are you using Affinity Photo, Designer Publisher? - In Designer and Publisher go to menu File > Document Setup, Colour tab and tick Transparent background; - In Photo go to menu Document and enable Transparent Background (you should see a tick before the commands name after you enable it) Let me now if you still have trouble.
