AlKratzer Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 Hi, New to Affinity and trying to get used to some of the differences from photoshop. Today I 1. Opened an image 2. Made 4 duplicate layers of the image 3. Clicked on one layer (presumably selecting that layer alone?) 4. Switched to Adjustment and chose Color Balance 5. By moving the hue slider ALL of the layers change, not just the selected layer. Can't for the life of me poke around and stumble on the way to make ONLY the selected layer change. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks! Quote

Hi AlKratzer, welcome to the forums Have a look in your layers panel, click and hold the thumbnail of your Colour Balance Layer then drag it over the layer that you want it applied to until you see a highlighted line, when you let go it will only affect the layer it is nested in. GarryP Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 In addition to what Murfee said above, I think it’s worth mentioning that there are two ways to drag an adjustment – or other layer – onto another layer. One is to drag it onto the thumbnail and the other is to drag it onto the name. Depending on the type of layer you’re dragging you might get a different result. I don’t think it matters for adjustments – someone will probably correct me if I’m wrong – but you need to be careful when dragging shapes and other things onto other layers, see attached video for a simple example. Watch how the blue box in the Layers Panel changes when you drag a layer to a different place. It’s worth knowing that there’s a difference just in case you find one way and think it’s the only way. I can’t find this in the Help but I’m pretty sure it’s in there somewhere. And there’s a video about it somewhere too, maybe for Designer but it’s the same functionality. 2020-02-26 13-26-23.mp4 Quote

The current method allows you to have an adjustment that will apply to everything, or to a specific layer, or to a specific group of layers, depending on where you place it. You can also open the Assistant Manager (View > Assistant Manager) and choose whether adjustments should be added as new layers or as child layers when you create them: Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. Jeremy Bohn Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 Yes, it also throws me off a little as well. In photoshop you have both live adjustments and destructive adjustments which sometimes would be nice to have. But currently I find it a little cumbersome to make an adjustment layer and then drop it onto the layer I want to adjust - an extra step. Unless I'm missing something, it would be great to select a layer and chose an adjustment, and have that adjustment automatically be linked to the selected layer. Quote

You're probably missing the Assistant setting I showed earlier.
