Flood selection tool

Recommended Posts

I am having difficulty with the flood selection tool on my Ipad pro.  I am new to the Affinity program, and am working my way through the workbook to familiarize myself with it.  So far, so good.....until chapter 2’s “creating a flood selection” section.  Using the file suggested, and the suggestions from online, I cannot get it to work.   The workbook image (flood-select.jpg) is already in pixel layer, but I did try rasterizing after all else failed.  I’ve changed layer, mode, tolerance, contiguous, and still cannot get any response from the tool......nothing happens.  I can choose the freehand selection tool,  and that works fine on the image, but not the flood selection tool, which is the one I need.  Thanks in advance for any other suggestions you may have.Help :)

Hi LoveLife,

Welcome to the forums :)

Using the in built screen recording tool on iPad please could you take a screen recording of you trying to use the tool and attach it to this post so I can see what might be happening.

Thanks

Callum

Good morning Callum.  Here’s the video of me trying to create a flood selection, and I just cannot get it to work.  I’m finding that a lot of the workbook tutorials don’t work seem to work with the Ipad.   I’m really hoping you can help me out with this one as that’s a tool I would use a lot.  Not sure how you feel about me tacking on another issue, but this morning I’m working on “removing ghosts” and I cannot seem to be able to find the Sources Panel on Ipad Affinity.  I’ve seen a few posts from people that the sources are not available on the Ipad version.  It seems like this is something that should there, so do you know if there is a way to view the individual sources on HDR merge?  Thanks Callum for any help you can offer.

Ok, it looks like you are using the tool as if it was the “smart selection tool”  which is where you paint it around the scene and it snaps to the edges.

With the “flood selection tool” simply tap on the colour you want to flood select, because you are sliding it around it never makes the colour selection.

Below I firstly repeat the wrong way to use the “flood tool”.

Then I use the “smart selection tool” using the steps you take and you should see the selection appear.

I then remove the selection and return to the “flood selection tool” and use it how it is intended which is to perform a simple screen tap on the colour that i want to auto select.

EDIT: I have added the relevant help sections, Flood select is a tap to select all colours close to the colour tapped on using the tolerance value as to how close the colour should be. Smart select is performed by painting in the region which is the action I believe you are doing in your video.

Not OP, but I was using Apple Pencil to tap.  Finger tap works, Apple Pencil tap does not. Thank you for visual tutorial.

I turn Touch for Gesture only; however, I do not get the blue circles shown in your video.  It works, just no indication on first tap that Apple Pencil registered the tap.

Hi Cecil, the blue circles are caused by this setting:-

Thank you Cecil !.

I do have some You Tube channels but I find the combination of words and video like on this forum and on facebook to be easier to construct a narrative on topics, having recently retired from a stressful engineering management job after 42 years I find Affinity to be very therapeutic and relaxing for me yet keeps my brain ticking over too !

Those shapes will need to be rasterised first to convert them to pixel layers.
