Aammppaa Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 The upgraded New Document dialogue is nice, but is missing the option to Retrieve Margin From Printer. Win10 Home x64 | AMD Ryzen 7 2700X @ 3.7GHz | 48 GB RAM | 1TB SSD | nVidia GTX 1660 | Wacom Intuos Pro
walt.farrell Posted February 16, 2020 Posted February 16, 2020 True. On the other hand, I have always wondered how Affinity would know, when creating a new document, which printer I planned to print it on eventually (I really expected, the first time I used that function, for the program to ask which printer to query. And was quite surprised when it didn't.) -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. Staff Sean P Posted February 17, 2020 Staff Posted February 17, 2020 Hi Aammppaa, Thanks for letting us know - this is something that I had already raised with development. I'll get your comments passed on. Mithferion and Rudolphus 2
Joachim_L Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 Do we need Margins from Printer anyway? Right now it is based on your default printer. So where is the benefit? Personally I never needed the margins from the printer as a page setup, but often enough clicked on the button by mistake (jumping with tabs through the input fields and hitting enter too early). Maybe a good place for showing the printer margins would be the printing dialogue, clicking on the print preview. ------ Windows 10 | i5-8500 CPU | Intel UHD 630 Graphics | 32 GB RAM | Latest Retail and Beta versions of complete Affinity range installed
walt.farrell Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 Retrieving them from the printer can be useful, in case the printer does not support edge-to-edge printing but you want to have the image as large as possible, and be able to see that image as you're designing it. But in my opinion it should ask which printer. I could obviously remember that I need a margin of 4.2mm, but it is/was convenient to have the button. I would use it when setting up the page / spread / artboard, rather than just at the point of printing. MikeW Posted February 17, 2020 Posted February 17, 2020 I've never (even accidentally) used this functionality either... But with 4 available print devices on the network, like Walt writes, I would desire an application to query what print devices are available and ask which to retrieve the margins from. Mark Ingram Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 Also, in macOS, when you ask the OS to retrieve the printer margins, it now just returns a fixed number, unrelated to any actual hardware related setting.
