I just spent $20 on Affinity for the iPad and the first thing that I try seems impossible to use: -- the clone brush.

So, what's the first thing to do? Look at the tutorials - "Clone brush" or "Clone" = "not found"

What's the use of having tutorials that don't even reference the basic tool set?

I wanted to replace Adobe Photoshop, but now I'm having second thoughts.

In the absence of an actual question, and assuming you want to know how to use the Clone tool, I recommend first reading the Help file. Affinity Photo is a lot different to PS so get used to a big learning curve. There are endless tutes on Google that can help too.

To Clone I prefer to add a pixel layer above the background that I want to clone from and then select the Clone tool. In the Context menu at bottom of screen select Sample current layer and below. Press finger on screen to select a Clone point and then move pencil (or finger) to brush in the cloned selection. Have fun,😀
