AF ver 1.7.3 MAC, issue with freehand selection tool

Recommended Posts

Hello to all.

I am running this app on an iMac with OSX El Capitan.

My issue is this. I can use the tool to select an area of a layer, and apply some levels and other (colors) adjustments.

Where I have a problem, is when I deselect that area, and select a new one. The adjustments effect the previous selection, and not the new one.

I am trying to use this method to clean up and adjust several areas of an astro image. Is it even possible to do this on one layer (Background)?

Thanks in advance.

How do you deselect and select a new selection? Meaning by first dismissing Cmd-D the previews made marquee selection, before selecting something on another layer then? - Further are the layers all (pixel) layers or are there also embedded/placed file (image) layers inside your document?

Just to be sure: Are you saying that after you deselect the first selection, and make a new selection, and make new adjustments, that the new adjustments affect the old selection?

I ask because if you were expecting your old adjustments to affect the new selection, they won't. They were masked to only apply to the original selection.

When using the freehand selection tool, check the "Mode:" setting in the context toolbar. If it is not set to "New" you may get unexpected results.

For each selection you need a separate adjustment layer. If you want one area darker and another area lighter you need a 'darker' adjustment layer and a 'lighter' adjustment layer with their own selections.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thanks to all for you quick and helpful suggestions.

To answer v_kyr, I choose the freehand selection tool, then on the first layer-Background or Pixel (at the bottom of the Layers list) I draw the selection around the area to be adjusted.

After I make the adjustment, I click on the "Deselect" menu. Then I "select" a new area and apply an adjustment.

That will only affect the previous, deselected, area, and not the new one.

For Walt-that is not what I desire to accomplish. I want to make adjustments to a new area. They may be similar, but may add more adjustments.

I will try the suggestions from the rest of you.

Thanks again to all.
