Adjusting image non-proportionally

Recommended Posts

How do you adjust an image non-proportionally? In InDesign, you click the second arrow down on the toolbar and the image is surrounded by a brown box. You can use that to adjust the shape of the image without adjusting the frame it sits in. So not only can you crop the image - you can also stretch it or squeeze it non-proportionally. How do you do that in Publisher?

It's not clear from your question whether you are using a Picture Frame or not.

The answer is also complicated because it can depend on the Preferences you have set, specifically:

Assuming you have left it set to the default of Automatic, then to resize a Placed image non-proportionally, and assuming the image is not in a Picture Frame, click on it, which will show the bounding box. Then hold Shift, grab any corner of the bounding box, and drag.

If you have left it as Automatic, and the image is in a Picture Frame, you can click on the image, then simply drag any corner of the frame's bounding box.

This depends on how the frame is configured - scale to max fit and scale to min fit will maintain aspect ratio.  Stretch to fit will cause the behavior that you are describing.

If it is set to "none" then the image can be scaled manually, separately from the frame.  In this case, double-click the frame to select the actual image layer inside the frame, then shift-drag the corner handles, or drag one of the side/top/bottom handles.

Dragging the side/top/bottom handles also works if the image is not in a frame.
