Jason Holt
Hi. Anyone else finding frequency separation very sluggish on Catalina (10.15.2)? Affinity photo is at 1.7.3 On my new MBP 16 inch with i9 blah blah the performance is very underwhelming. In fact, when using FS my tired old 12 inch MacBook performs more smoothly and faster. I've tried turning GPU on and off. Problem persists. Would appreciate any thoughts and or advice as I'm seriously considering a return for the MBP. Cheers. Staff DWright Posted January 20, 2020 Staff Share Posted January 20, 2020 Hi @Jason Holt, Can you please try setting your Radeon Pro 5500M as the default GPU and turn off the automatic switched between this card and the Intel UHD Graphics 630 GPU, also try turning of the Metal compute option. Jason Holt
Can you please confirm how I make the Radeon 5500M the default. Presume this is a setting in preferences, using OpenGL?
Staff DWright Posted January 21, 2020 Staff Share Posted January 21, 2020 There is a free app called gfxCardStatus that shows the current GPU being used and allows to to switch between the Inal and AMD GPU and also adjust the switching options. Yese please try using the OpenGL rather than metal and see if the performance improves
Jason Holt
Ah OK. Perfect @DWright. I have installed that. I did check the option to NOT auto switch in preferences but that seems to have reverted. Now in GFX CardStatus I have selected discrete only. In AP preferences I have 'Only use integrated GPU' ticked with OpenGL display selected. 'Enable Metal compute acceleration' is now unchecked. Presume that is all correct. I'll experiment more and pop any comments in here. Thanks for your help - much appreciated!
Jason Holt
@DWright correction! In AP preferences I have 'Only use integrated GPU' UN-ticked with OpenGL display selected.
