You're in the Character panel, which (as its name suggests) deals with characters, and the two settings there (kerning, tracking) deal with space between letters.

Perhaps you want the Justification section of the Paragraph panel. The first 3 entries there provide settings for minimum, maximum, and desired word spacing.

This may sound flippant but you can add spaces using the spacebar and the Text > Insert Character > Em Space and En Space. They are the same width as the font height and half the width of the font height. The justification section of the Paragraph panel has a section about desired word spacing and Maximum word spacing 250% seems to be the maximum.

As I said, that's the first three settings in the justification part of the paragraph panel.

@Boroji, maybe this will help you better understand what Walt meant:

Wow, that is not intuitive at all. Word spacing is such a huge typography tool for copy fitting.

Walt, Bruce, RC-R: Thank you for explaining this.

Boroji: Thanks for bringing this topic up so we can easily find it.

Serif: If your paying attention, making this more obvious and easier to find would be a very welcome addition.

I want to second that request. I often have text with multiple lines that are purposely not justified, and sometimes a single line of this text is a bit too wide. It is typographically the better way to adjust the word spacing, before squeezing the letters. So please add this configuration. 🙂

IMO the placement of the controls makes sense, they're not used everyday, but I think the naming could be improved. They're named Justification which doesn't make sense to me because desired word and letter spacing also apply to non-justified text. I recently suggested that it be renamed to Alignment Options.

I'm not sure I understand, the option is already there in the Justification section of the Paragraph panel. The name of the section may be misleading but the word spacing options will apply just as well to your non-justified text.

Aaah, now I see. You're right. Thanks for nudging me in the right direction. 🙂 It is indeed hard to find there, when you want to apply a fixed spacing and do not know that it is handled like this.

Now that I know where to find it I even prefer it that way, as it is even more and better configurable.

Thanks again for that quick reply and all the best. 🎅

[Small typo] At the end of this page, I think one must read Character instead of Paragraph:

Quote

Minimum, Desired, and Maximum letter spacing: Set the desired space between characters, before the application of kerning and tracking. […].
Changing the desired spacing is similar to chang- ing tracking at the
paragraph character level.

I think I just worded it poorly. I meant it is similar to changing tracking for a paragraph since the Justification options apply to the paragraph as a whole. I will reword it. Thanks!

Thank you, I get it.
IOW you meant: Changing the desired Letter spacing does the same as Tracking does for a selection of characters, but for whole paragraphs.
(My confusion came from that the word Tracking seems in APub to be only used for the characters panel.)

Sorry for the disturbance.
