the first ellipse disappears

Have you given it a stroke? If not, it will only be visible when it's selected.

thanks guys for your replies, walt what do you mean given it a stroke,Gary I can see what you are doing  when I make the first ellipse and click to make the the second ellipse the first one disappears so I cannot put it inside my first ellipse, sorry if I sound a bit stupid but this is the first time I have used photo editing software.another problem I have is when I click on colours /boxes nothing like the colour boxes on your screen show on mine.

Ah, then it sounds like, as Walt mentioned above, that your ellipse has no Stroke, therefore it isn’t visible once it’s not selected.
Select your ellipse and look at the Context Toolbar, which should be just under the normal Toolbar. (If it’s not, go to menu “View → Show Context Toolbar”)
If you see the thing pointed to by the red arrow in my attached image – which means “No Stroke” – then just press that button and make sure that you have a “Style” of “Solid Line Style” and a Width that is not 0. Then press the button pointed to by my yellow arrow and set the colour you want.
I hope this is enough to get you on your way again.
