AP crashes with RAW files

AkaDrows

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just wondering if anyone can please help me.

I have AP on my 6th gen iPad which is up to date, iOS 13.3

My issue is editing RAW files in develop mode the app just crashes and all progress is lost which is really annoying I have to edit the same photo up to 5 times just to get it how I want so I can save it. Does anyone know if a fix for this?
RAW files are NEF on average 29MB from a Nikon D5600 if that makes a difference. I will eventually I hope to get AP for my computer (still debating now) when I can get back to work but until then this is my only means of editing and am beyond frustrated.

Hi AkaDrows :)

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble, I've tried to replicate this issue here, however I only have the latest iPad Pro to hand so it isn't a complete 'apples-to-apples' comparison.

Could you please confirm for me:

  • Does this crash always happen when performing the same change, or does it seemingly occur randomly?
  • If you load a RAW file, make 1 change to it - set the exposure for example - then develop it, does the app handle this correctly?
  • Does this happen with any of your RAW files, or only certain ones?

Thanks in advance!

Please Note: I am now out of the office until Tuesday 2nd April on annual leave.

If you require urgent assistance, please create a new thread and a member of our team will be sure to assist asap.

Many thanks :)

Hi Madperk,

Welcome to the forums :)

I am editing DNG Files from a mavic 2 pro.

As can be seen from the Apple supported RAW list (that Affinity Photo uses), unfortunately the Mavic 2 pro is not currently a supported device, which is likely causing the crashes. Unfortunately it is with Apple to add support for this model for it to be compatible with the app, my apologies!

Hey, thanks for getting back to me.
It seems I occur randomly and it’s usually once I’ve done all or nearly all, my adjustments I have the photos loaded directly to my camera roll.

Changing one or two things is generally fine, and it seems to be on all RAW files, I did lower the  amount of Undo limit to 30 thought that might help and have changed the save interval to 30. After doing this I edited one picture developed fine then went to do frequency separation and it crashed again lucky it was saved by then. It just seems to be unstable with all RAW files I have not just any particular ones.

My sincerest apologies for the delayed response.

I've been testing this issue on the same iPad model, running iOS 13 & 1.7.3 Affinity Photo. I opened 3 separate RAW files from the D5600, all saved in the Photo Library. I applied changes in the Develop Persona, developed the image and then added a few adjustment layers to the image, alongside editing the pixels themselves using a few different tools.

I then exported the file as JPEG and used the Share option to save it directly back to the Photo Library, at no point during the 3 images editing process did the app crash for me.

It would help for me to see your crash reports here, please open your iPads settings and navigate to Settings>Privacy>Analytics>Analytics data. Here you should see files titled 'Photo iPad [Date] .ips'
Could you please copy and paste the text into your reply from the most recent crash log?

Many thanks in advance!

  • 1 month later...

I have the same issue. Trying to open a NEF file from a Nikon D5300 it reports that it is not supported!   Worked fine before the update.

Even deleted and reinstalled losing work and no change.

Annoyed as AF on iPad is my main editing tool and I can’t use it.  Not sure if I should update the PC version now or leave it.

So one of the biggest camera formats is no longer supported? Didn’t they just add support for cannon? So what change cameras if you want to use AP to edit raw files 😅 I’m confused

We believe this issue may be related to Compressed RAW files from Canon. Could you please confirm, are you using Compressed RAWs (set on your camera when taking photos) ?

We believe this issue may be related to Compressed RAW files from Canon. Could you please confirm, are you using Compressed RAWs (set on your camera when taking photos) ?

12-Bit compressed NEF (RAW) files from Nikon D5600 there is no way to select uncompressed so this format isn’t supported?

Hello

i have same problem, with my RAW files from canon 200D

When I´ve been working RAW. files,  the app crashes on my iPad 2018

Any update?

There have been may fixes applied in latest V1.8.2 beta but look to Chris B post above your post and add any problematic raw files to the RAW test cases Dropbox to ensure that your issue is resolved.

It’s all of my files not just particular ones. I uploaded an orange rose although I’m not sure if it will work because I have tried to upload it to my Dropbox then downloaded it and it wasn’t RAW anymore hopefully it does and is able to help find a solution

You don’t have to use the Dropbox, you can directly load RAW files here, here are two example raw files.

750_2113_2.NEF

IMG_0350.CR2

The NEF file crashes 1.8.0 similar to your video but works fine under the 1.8.2 beta.

Yours worked fine here mine says 201.28kb so not sure if that’s just the preview but will try anyway. I uploaded to Dropbox too but here’s the same one here just in case.  If it makes any difference sounds like it’s on the mend though with the beta so good news now just the waiting game haha cheers for your help 👌🏽

Out of the 5 images that were submitted, only 3 were raw files. Not sure why the flower images were JPEGs.

Those 3 raw files on my 2017 iPad Pro had no issue with being edited and then developed. I'm not sure if this is related to compressed raw images or if it's a hardware issue. I am using the beta as well but I did check the retail version.

What spec are the iPad's that you are using?

I’m using IPad 2018 - 6th generation

for a long time I’ve never had any problem like that. Since last update some RAW files crashes after few minutes editing

I can try emailing them? I think it’s the file type or something because I’ve tried to upload them to Dropbox before and had the same issue like I said before, I don’t really understand it 🤷🏽‍♂️ I’m also using iPad 6th generation

Just uploading here off my computer and I get a -200 Error message so have added to the Dropbox again I'm fairly certain that worked this time!
Appreciate all the help.

Edit* looks like my camera was set to 14bit not sure if it makes a difference but I’ll try the app on 12 bit too
