IDML import: wrong typography options set (b523)

Recommended Posts

I love the new idml-import. Now, that I'm using it more and more, I'm also looking into other fields than just boxes and linked pictures.

Textstyles:

One of my documents has vertically centred text and paragraph lines. I noticed the lines disappearing on the second and third level. Also the centered Text is not centered anymore.

I realized there are some settings not converted correctly:

I have experienced this as well. It seems to be an error in how baseline grid is calculated. In the attached IDML, there is a single text box that should be center aligned when saved in InDesign, but it is off-center when imported. (With a shorter text frame, it appears the same as top aligned, which also confused me at first.)

If in the text frame settings, I check "Ignore Baseline Grid," then it aligns properly. The thing is, when that setting is not checked, it does not actually seam to be properly aligned with the baseline grid anyway, for example (with "Show baseline grid" enabled):

(That is the same file opened in InDesign at the top of the screenshot.)

I noticed in your document, you have a leading override enabled, which is why your text is not aligned.

Nevermind, I was wrong, here...

Also, unrelated, I saw that there is another setting for the frames OWN baseline grid (yours was disabled, correctly)

@garrettm30 now I have it: there is a second item, called "Align to basement grid" which has to be enabled...

weird. O.o

My version of this issue as mentioned in my post above appears to be resolved in the new beta 531, evidently this particular fix:

The original poster may wish to confirm whether the issue as he originally described it is resolved in beta 531. @woefi

The first Issue (baseline grid) is resolved in Beta 531. (thank you, Affinity!)

The other one (Lines, text decoration) still does not convert correctly. (see workaround)

A third one I noticed is indenting text from the right – you have to explicitly define the same value to "last line indenting"

Hi both,

Can you attach a sample file illustrating this?

I included a pdf, so you can see what it should look like.

While some import quirks have been fixed in the new beta 549, the text indenting issues and paragraph lines unfortunately are not:

We've not resolved the indenting issue yet. Sorry :(

No problem, if it's recognized and at least logged somewhere. 😉

(in the meantime, there are workarounds)

We have made fixes/improvements to this area (IDML with tab stops and bulletins is imports incorrectly) of the program in the latest customer beta. If you would like to try these changes the beta software is available in the forum posts listed below.

The latest beta builds are downloadable from links at the top of each of these beta forum posts.

These betas install parallel, next to the release version (they do not overwrite your release) and so the fixes can be tried in the beta without affecting your normal workflow in the release version.

Once these programs have been through a full beta process the change will be released in a future free 1.8.0 update/patch to all customers.

Thanks for this beta. I'm noticing a behaviour when opening/importing an IDML file. The exported file is an A5 landscape, facing pages. When it eventually loads the spreads that should be facing pages (210mm x 148mm) become 420mm x 148mm.

Screen-Shot-2020-02-25-11-23-18.jpg

I'm guessing it's the way InDesign allows you to split spreads but allow them to be designated as left and right hand pages (something I wish AP could do too).

I can look at the file if you attach it, but yes if you have a split spread with more than 2 pages on (for example a 3 page spread) we don't support those types of document models, so have to do the best we can when importing them, and it looks like that's what has happened.

Not just "more than 2" but even a spread of just two pages are being combined into one single page for me. It looks like that is the case in Marty's screenshot also (420 = 210×2).

If it's not a facing page document in InDesign that will happen, it's possible to have a spread of 2 pages in InDesign that isn't a facing page document. We don't really understand that concept in Publisher so will have to merge them.
