Dumb newbie question on saving a selection

Recommended Posts

Hi. All I'm trying to do is save a rectangular selection (made with marquee too) to a file. However when I follow the instructions, repeated below in blue, the only file type that available is "afselection". I don't know what that is, but all I want is to save it as a JPG or PNG file. Please advise. Thanks.

To save a selection to a file:
  1. With a pixel selection in place, from the Select menu, select Save Selection.
  2. Adjust the dialog settings as required.
  3. Click Save.

Hi. - A selection in the context as you describe above is the lasso/rect/round selection, thus the marquee selection form and dimension and not the image contents (in german: quasi nur die Lasso-Auswahl).

In order to get what you want, either ...

  • Make a marquee tool selection on an image/bitmap and copy/paste into a new file, then export that new file with the selected contents as a JPG or PNG.
  • Or crop the opened image/bitmap with the crop tool to the rectangular area you want and export the crop as a JPG/PNG.

Note that, as indicated above, there are several different ways possible to get a selected image/bitmap area saved. I just showed two common ones here.

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2
