Hi, New-ish to Affinity Photo so this might be an expected feature, but I've not been able to locate any information on it on the forums or manual ( or maybe I've searched for the wrong thing. )

Issue/situation:
Sometimes when I add a level adjustment, the Histogram does not update when changing values. This issue does not seem to be consistent but not sure what would provoke it.

Screen recording:
See screen recording of the issue.

Operating system:
OSX Catalina 10.15.2

Affinity Photo:
Version 1.7.3

Unusual hardware:
Wacom tablet Intuos pro

Any help or input on this matter is much appreciated, as I'm considering moving from other editors to Affinity Photo.

Thank you in advance.

PS: if this post is in the wrong forum, then please let me know, and I will submit it in another.

I don’t think the Histogram in the Levels dialog is supposed to change while you are manipulating the settings. This is so you can see what the original looks like. If it changed with the changes to the settings you would be changing the settings according to what the image looks like with the settings applied. A vicious circle. If you want to see the Histogram for the entire image use View → Studio → Histogram.

Hi Garry,

Thanks for the input.
The histogram in the Levels Adjustment does change sometimes so I am assuming this would be the correct behaviour.

See attached screen recording of the histogram working correctly now. – as I mentioned I can't say what makes it work sometimes and sometimes not, which is why I posted the qestion.

Also, The Histogram ( from View > Studio ) and the Levels Adjustment's Histogram should produce the same output considering it's a representation of the whole image ( it should not matter where the adjustments in the stack are made ).

You’re welcome.

In your first video, the histogram shown is that in the Levels dialog. That histogram relates only to the part of the image that the Levels adjustment will be applied to, that being either the accumulation of the layers (and maybe other adjustments) beneath the adjustment, or, the layer the adjustment has been applied to (and any layers inside that layer).

When you change the settings in the Levels adjustment that histogram will stay the same because the part of the image the adjustment will be applied to does not change. An Adjustment only changes what you can see, it does not change the underlying image; i.e. all adjustments are “Live” adjustments.

However, in your second video, the histogram in the Histogram Panel (top-left) changes as that histogram relates to the ‘final’ image you can see on the canvas rather than any particular layer. That’s why the histogram in the Histogram Panel changes when you change the settings of the Levels adjustment while the histogram in the Levels dialog doesn’t. The Layers histogram only applies to what the adjustment will be applied to and it won’t change when you change the adjustment settings because what the adjustment is being applied to doesn’t change.

So, to put that briefly(-ish), the histogram in the Histogram Panel is for the whole image whereas the histogram in the Levels dialog is for the part of the image that the Levels adjustment will apply to. And these will both be different unless you haven’t made any changes to the adjustment settings, when they should be the same, because no adjustment has been made.

I hope this clears things up a bit (and I’ve explained it properly).
