Making detaching easier in publisher

Recommended Posts

I'm an occasional InDesign user who'd love to make the switch to Affinity. I tried the Publisher beta a year ago and it feels like it's come a long way in terms of usability since then, but I still haven't figured out the proper workflow for using master pages. The way I use them in InDesign is essentially as a template, so each spread would come pre-populated with some frames in reasonable locations.

However, I find myself wanting to make lots of individual tweaks on any given spread, which necessitates:

  1. Finding the master object in the layers window
  2. Clicking "Edit: Detached"
  3. Making a tweak
  4. Clicking "Finish"

This seems extreme in terms of the number of mouse clicks required, and is limiting/prescriptive in the workflow process. Am I missing something obvious? If not, I would love it if there could be a global "detached" mode, or at the very least, a key command that would enter detached mode for the master containing the currently-selected object.

It may help you if you make sure that in Preferences, User Interface, you have the "Show Selection in Layers Panel" option enabled.
