otherworlds Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 I have been using the trial version of Affinity Photo for 9 days and I am impressed with it. I am about to purchase the license but I would like to clarify something first. If I purchase the license today at full cost, I want to be assured that at no point in the future am I going to be required to pay again in order to update the software. Please can someone confirm if this is the case? Thanks Quote
mac_heibu Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 This is true for all versions 1.xx. You have to pay, when (a) version 2.xx will be released and (b) you want to buy it. If you (a) don‘t need or want a version 2 (whenever it will be published) or (b) future versions of your operating system will not prevent the app to work correctly, you will never ever need to spend money for the app, you buy now. It is just like your diesel car: You bought it and you don‘t need to pay for its a second time – unless you don‘t want a new one or future law will prevent you to continue driving it for climate reasons. Welcome to the forums, otherworlds. As mac_heibu said, that's true for version 1 updates. But also you should be aware that: 1. A license for Windows does not let you use the software on MacOS or iOS, or vice versa. 2. It is important to consider which Store you purchase from. I recommend buying directly from Serif as in some ways I think it makes support easier if you have problems. But some users prefer the easier updating through the Mac or Windows Stores. Whichever you choose, you cannot move your license to a different store later. otherworlds Posted December 29, 2019 Author Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) In plain and clear language please. Are you telling me that if I purchase v1.x now, I will need to pay again to upgrade to 2.x once it's released? Edited December 29, 2019 by otherworlds Move Along People 1 Quote
mac_heibu Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 Please, read the answers above! Don’t think it is not „plain and clear“. Of course you have to pay for a version 2 (when it will be released in some years), but you are free to stay with version 1.xx for ever and a day. Clear enough? Quote
otherworlds Posted December 29, 2019 Author Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) Thanks for clarifying. The problem with this is that you are stuck with the bugs and missing features from v1.9.x with no hope for a fix or any improvements without paying again. Meanwhile all v2.x users are getting the required improvements and patches to their software. It's sad that people are OK with this business model. When I purchase a piece of software I expect it to be maintained and updated until the end of its life. Curtailing its life prematurely with an arbitrary "Version 2" title is underhanded and will drive the devs to move to "Version 2" as soon as possible. Thankfully it's easy enough to acquire the software without paying and unfortunately (for Serif!) that's what I'm going to do. mac_heibu Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 What a stupid logic! The only thinkable consequence for you would be in this case, not to use Affinity software, but you are going to steal it instead. I don‘t like criminal minds at all, so I really hope, they kick you out here as soon as possible! Wiz-Art!/MDG, Move Along People and emmrecs01 1 2 Quote
PaulEC Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 I really love the sort of logic that the OP (and a few others) express. Wouldn't it be nice if after buying Photoshop 5 many, many years ago, I had never had to pay for any new versions, and I could now use Photoshop CC, without spending another penny over the last 20 odd years! Of course, it's highly unlikely that Adobe would still be in business with that sort of business model! Still, he does have one good idea, why don't we all just save a few quid and steal everything, rather than actually paying for it? – I'm just off down to the supermarket. emmrecs01, Wiz-Art!/MDG, Move Along People and 1 other 4 Quote Acer XC-895 : Core i5-10400 Hexa-core 2.90 GHz : 32GB RAM : Intel UHD Graphics 630 : Windows 11 Home Affinity Publisher 2 : Affinity Photo 2 : Affinity Designer 2 : (latest release versions) on desktop and iPad "Beware of false knowledge, it is more dangerous than ignorance." hkypuck Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 So basically what the original poster is saying is that he should only have to pay once for his steak at the market. After that, he can just go and steal it. Quote
