even in this file

Try upload this file.

Try Black brush before inverting mask.

Edit: in your History is Blur layer many times, and Set protect alfa. It is necessary and OK?

Applying a Live Gaussian Blur, and ticking the "protect alpha" box will give you 3 History entries:

  1. Add Gaussian Blur Layer
  2. Set Protect Alpha
  3. Gaussian Blur

That accounts for 3 of the 4 History entries related to the Gaussian Blur. The final entry could be from editing the blur parameters again.

5 brushing, no effect

6 brushing again no effect

From your last two screenshots, we can see that the thumbnail for the Gaussian Blur layer is not changing, which gives another hint that you are not really painting (or not painting white).

From the Context Toolbar options shown on the last two screenshots, I think you have chosen the Paint Mixer Brush Tool, not the Paint Brush Tool. If you had the Paint Brush Tool you should also have on the right side of the Context Toolbar settings for Blend Mode, Wet Edges, and Protect Alpha. Those options are not present for the Paint Mixer Brush, and are not present in your screenshots.

So, I keep looking at the last two screenshots…
The Paint Brush tool is clearly selected in the left Tools panel.
Size 1200px
Opacity & Flow are 100%.
Then I look at the Colour Panel. That’s odd.
Can you really have an RGB number starting with 3? They look like they all say 328.9???
And colour Opacity is set to 0%.
In the last screenshot the RGB sliders in the Colour Panel are all at 0% and Colour Opacity at 100% but the two colour dots are both showing as white?
If the sliders are correct then you are painting Black on Black.

Why Set protect alpha? If I set/enabled Protect alpha in Context Toolbar - brush not work!

The Set Protect Alpha we see in the History is for the Gaussian Blur, not for the Brush.

Yes, looks like some confusion of color settings.

Yes, set "Protect Alpha" in Context Toolbar for the Brush is not even saved in history. Weird.

And protect alpha in Live Gaussian Blur is named "Preserve Alpha", and in history is listed as "Set protect alpha". Weird.

Very understandable :-)

That's a large file to have to use 100px blur and it only blur it like that. What are the pixel dimensions of that file?

  1. Out of curiosity I downloaded a large image of peppers (4608 x 3456) Added a Gaussian blur of 44px this produced a similar blur to your second image in the post above. (So, using a blur of 100px must be close to double the size image I'm using.)
  2. Invert the Gaussian Blur Live Filter Layer so it turns black and reveals the image without blur
  3. I select a Basic brush and set all parameters to 100%
  4. Select white as the brush colour to reveal the blur and paint.
  5. Result: it reveals the blur.

It looks like you are going round in circles so I would suggest the clear user data option
I would use this with caution and selectively, as always backup anything you do not want to lose.

Launch the app with (ctrl) held down until a Clear User Data dialog appears. Press the Select All button then press the Clear button. Note this will reset everything to app defaults - user preferences, palettes, macros, everything. If you want to reset just the UI and user prefs leave just the first three checkboxes ticked and press the Clear button.

Below is the screen you will see, by default the top 3 options are selected but you can deselect them and only choose the options you want to try, so in your case reset brushes and reset Adjustments.

520683393_ClearUserdata.png.eeee263c41b1f937d080d4d748253b30.png

As always backup anything you do not want to lose. So if you have any custom brushes or imported brushes export them out or backup the Raster_Brushes.propcol file, similarly for Adjustments but you will need to copy the Adjustments.propcol file to a save place.

Yes it was an erratic problem so I reset some of the functions and will see. Thank you.

I must add that since I installed on my imac the Catalina OS I found AP more prone to sudden crashes and erratic behavior. Nothing that prevents me from using it but something that makes me save more often than  i did before Catalina.

Happy new year to all.

I updated to Catalina and zero crash of AP.  Apple Photos doesn’t  work, as intended; however, this was a bug reported Mojave.
