what am I missing in selectively blur an image...

Recommended Posts

Hello, in many occasions I blurred selectively area of an image doing (I believe...) this sequence:

live filter blur the entire image

Invert layer, and now my image is normal again

select a paint brush tool

brush over the areas I want to blur.

Well I may be missing something since this sequence does not work.

Thank you.

When you mention invert, is it the mask you're inverting?

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.

Where does it fail? What are you seeing, step by step?

Edit: And, what color are you painting with? It would need to be white, I think.

Yes, white brush (and correct opacity, flow and hardness) works fine.

Black brush works without inverting the layer - removes blur.

Yes, invert mask for live filter, not source layer.

No, I invert the layer:

Layer >then>invert

When you create the live blur filter, and with the filter highlighted in the layers panel, hit ctrl-i to invert the filter only. Then apply a brush to place the blur as desired.

So, again, where does it fail and what are you seeing?

For example:

1. When you blur the image, does it blur? Try using a big radius value to make the blur super obvious.

2. When you invert the mask on the filter does it unblur?

3. With the mask still selected, when you paint with a wide basic brush, with 100% hardness and flow, using white, does it blur again?

1 yes it blur

3 does not blur again but it stays parfectly un-blurred. That is my problem. I made a video but cannot upload.

I'll assume the answer to 2 was Yes :)

If you can't upload the video here, upload it to Dropbox, OneDrive, GoogleDrive, or another file sharing site and share a link to it.

Is the problem specific to one document, or does it happen on other documents?

Can you share a document where this isn't working for you?

My point is: is the sequence correct? In which case this becomes a bug

Or it becomes something specific to that image and/or layer setup that we don't understand. Until you give us a document or manage to upload a video somewhere I would not immediately jump to "it's a bug". It may be one, but there are more possibilities.

I doubt that you've found a bug. Maybe this will help...

here the sequence as scree shoots.

1 the image just opened

2 the layer life blur filter applied

3 the layer inverted

4 the brush

5 brushing, no effect

6 brushing again no effect

I must say that I tried this in other files of AP I had and almost always it works. even in this file, for no reason worked and then after reopening it did not work again and that is when I took the screen shots. So t looks like an erratic behavior and therefore a bug or something like that in my opinion.

Thanks to all.

That's a large file to have to use 100px blur and it only blur it like that. What are the pixel dimensions of that file?

  1. Out of curiosity I downloaded a large image of peppers (4608 x 3456) Added a Gaussian blur of 44px this produced a similar blur to your second image in the post above. (So, using a blur of 100px must be close to double the size image I'm using.)
  2. Invert the Gaussian Blur Live Filter Layer so it turns black and reveals the image without blur
  3. I select a Basic brush and set all parameters to 100%
  4. Select white as the brush colour to reveal the blur and paint.
  5. Result: it reveals the blur.

It looks like you are going round in circles so I would suggest the clear user data option
I would use this with caution and selectively, as always backup anything you do not want to lose.

Launch the app with (ctrl) held down until a Clear User Data dialog appears. Press the Select All button then press the Clear button. Note this will reset everything to app defaults - user preferences, palettes, macros, everything. If you want to reset just the UI and user prefs leave just the first three checkboxes ticked and press the Clear button.

Below is the screen you will see, by default the top 3 options are selected but you can deselect them and only choose the options you want to try, so in your case reset brushes and reset Adjustments.

520683393_ClearUserdata.png.eeee263c41b1f937d080d4d748253b30.png

As always backup anything you do not want to lose. So if you have any custom brushes or imported brushes export them out or backup the Raster_Brushes.propcol file, similarly for Adjustments but you will need to copy the Adjustments.propcol file to a save place.
