Is there any way I can temporarily hide the 'marching ants' outline on a selection I have made, make some mods and then return to the 'marching ants'?

I was always able to do this in Pshop by using command H.

AFAIK temporary in that sense won't work here, you can completely dismiss the selection, or save then dismiss and then reload a selection.

In Photo, you can toggle visibility of the selection by going to > View > Show Pixel Selection and unticking.

You can assign a shortcut key yourself by going to > Edit > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts.
