Master Page Layers

Recommended Posts

Yes, I know there are some threads about global layers.
I still think without those layers Publisher is NOT the right choice for professional DTP !!!!

But there is another issue I could need some help – if there is a solution at all.
I encountered a problem on working with the master layers.
They are always grouped on each page, but I need them seperated as in this example:

- Master Layer 1 (e.g. frame on top of the page)
- Text Layer
    - textframe 1
    - textframe 2
- Graphic Layer
    - picture 1
    - picture 2
    - picture 3
- Master Layer 2 (e.g. background)

The master layers must be in this order (to overlap some of the other elements).
So please tell me, is there a way to get that?

Hi @Blaubär,

you can use multiple master pages and rearrange them according to your stacking order.

E.g. one master page with the elements that go onto the top and one master page that goes to the bottom.
By default APub adds master pages to the bottom of the layers so you will have to rearange them. This requires a little planing beforehand. Only with a large page count it may become a little (or better: very) cumbersome.

Thanks, this works.

But it is a deeeeep pain to do the rearranging on a complete book’s pages ...   :(

You can do this kind of work on a single page design in Designer, but software like Publisher ist made for multi page layouts, right?

I guess, I have to stick to Indesign for some time.

It's easy to do.

On any document page with the master applied:

  • In the Layers panel, right-click on the Master Page layer that should be in front of the page content, and choose Edit Linked.
  • From the main menu, Layer > Arrange > Move to Front.
  • Click Finished in the orange bar at the top of the page.

That will move that master page layer to the top of the layer stack on all the document pages you have applied that master page to. (Note that if you create additional document pages after that, those pages will have the master at the bottom, again. So you will want to do this action late in your workflow. Also, if you create additional content on any page after doing the above, you will need to place it properly in the layer stack yourself.

If you also have APhoto (and doing a lot of editing/changes/additions to your document) you can run a macro (within Publisher) to move a specific Master Page layer to the top at any time across all pages.

Thus preventing the need to do it for all additional pages you create or having to remember to move any new content you create below the Master Page you had previously moved to the top.
