I place png files (created in Musescore 3) in an affinity publisher project. When exporting as pdf, the resolution of the musical lines and notes seem quite low (quality is certainly lower than in the original png).

Is there a solution?

I use to work with Indesign, and I exportes pdf's in Musescore to import in Indesign. That worked fine, but it does not work in Affinity publisher (notes are displayed as scares. I suppose embedded fonts are not read?).

Another export option in Musescore is svg.

Which export options do you use? Best would be to post the Publisher file here.

...if you're reading this and you have time, could you test if you can render the attached Musescore-created PDFwith pdfToolbox or Acrobat DC -- I tried with PDF Flattener of Acrobat Pro X, but it could not convert the fonts to outlines, it did not touch the embedded fonts, at all)] ...

Sure.

Thanks, excellent. Was this Acrobat DC or callas pdfToolbox created (assuming the latter, but as you mentioned that Acrobat DC handles font conversions to curves better than version X, it would be interesting to know if it can handle this one, as well)?

I used pdfToolbox. Since Acrobat DC, the pdfToolbox routine is in Acrobat. Might have been put into one of the Acrobat CC versions, maybe about 2015/16 or so.

I've attached another version using Acrobat Pro XI...there is a trick when using the flattener preview to outline fonts. Many pdfs will have transparency. This pdf has none. The Flattener Preview will only convert fonts to outlines if there also is transparency.

So, add a Watermark to every page and set the watermark to zero opacity. I have a preset that uses 8 point text in the upper left corner. Once the watermark has been added, then use the flattener preview to convert the fonts.

I've used the watermark thing in A Pro since one could do so (which may have been, well, forever).

I use a text watermark.

Not that I want to keep a person from getting a Christmas present! On the plus side if you get pdfToolbox, it also can do simple impositions. But creating a new preset isn't for the faint of heart...

I have been having similar problems. I scanned in some old music using VueScan at 300dpi. I then used Photo to clean up the images and exported it as PNG-8 at 300dpi. I then placed them in a Publisher document and exported to pdf.  Previously this had worked with no problem, but my most recent effort had poor resolution. Having read this thread, I checked my export settings, and the dpi for rasterized components was 72. I changed this to 300dpi and now all is well. I suspect this has happened since the last upgrade.
