Often when I re-work a photo I change the layer filters options and decide to go back not to the default but to the starting point. this is impossible now except with the history thing which can be cumbersome and difficult at times.

Please, allows for a restore or like you want to call that function that goes back to the starting point. It seems simple and logical to me.

What do you mean by "the starting point"? I think we'll need more info about your workflow.

For example, if you start with RAW images, you can just reopen the original RAW file. But if you start with a JPG image, modify it, and save over the original, it's gone and there's no way to recover.

If you've saved started with a JPG, and have saved a .afphoto file, then you can go back to the very beginning by reopening the original JPG, or by using the Snapshots panel and reverting to the original snapshot.

Edit: Or, of course, if you simply mean that you want to undo the effects of one filter, they're destructive and History is your only hope, I think. But you could use Live Filters, instead.

Look at the Document > Snapshot feature.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.7 | Affinity Photo 2.5.7 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.7 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Thanks you but wouldn't  it be easier and logical if there was a little option to go back to where it was when the filter was last opened instead than the useless as it is now reset button? In fact one can reset to the defaults by deleting and reopening

The button is used to reset to the default settings while you're adjusting the filter initially. It is not useless, in my opinion and workflow :)
