I remember my dreams.

Seriously tho, I believe is better to put your imagination to the hardest test, it has better benefits.

A different matter tho, and a constant pain for us illustrators is the need to search for references, specially for historic or technical material. I can't really know how a french gauntlet form XVII century did look like until I see one, and draw it from several angles... From then on is that I can memorize it and replicate it in "3D" in my thick skull.

If you use Chrome browser there is a great addon called Muzli (by InVision) which showcases some of the great stuff on other sites like dribble, behance etc.
There's often very inspirational stuff on there.
