anettdc Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 I'm thinking about getting a tablet for basic browsing and whatnot and to run Affinity Designer on. I have been using the desktop (win) version for a couple of years and love it. I have never owned any Apple products. My desktop is W10, my phone is Android so iPad would be interesting but I'm sure I can manage. I'm not a professional illustrator just like to tinker with vector graphics for fun. With that in mind, would you recommend the iPad 10"/4/32gb for $250 or the Surface Go 10"/4/64gb for $300? Don't really want to spend more than that. Thank you! Quote
R C-R Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 If you were a Mac user, I would recommend the iPad, in part because it has a better screen & is (at least arguably) a more powerful machine. See for example this (now somewhat dated article) for more about the similarities & differences between the two devices. However, since you are a Windows user I think the Surface Go would clearly be the better choice for you because (a) it runs an OS you are already familiar with & (b) the iPad can only run the iPadOS version of AD, which is a feature-reduced version of the desktop app & requires purchasing a separate (if inexpensive) license. anettdc 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.5.7 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 All 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.7
heyavanes Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Ipad version: i personally don't think that 32GB is enough for vector drawings. I would buy one with more GB. anettdc 1 Quote
walt.farrell Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Note, though that the iPad version of Designer is tailored to make good use of tablet-based features. On the other hand, the Windows version of Designer will look and work the same on the Surface Go as it looks on any Windows machine. There is no accomodation to any of the tablet features of the Surface Go, and Designer will still work best with a keyboard attached. You can draw on the screen, but it's not truly the same kind of tablet experience you'd get with the iPad. heyavanes, anettdc and Seneca 2 1 Quote -- Walt Designer, Photo, and Publisher V1 and V2 at latest retail and beta releases PC: Desktop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 64GB memory, AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core @ 3.00 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Laptop: Windows 11 Pro 23H2, 32GB memory, Intel Core i7-10750H @ 2.60GHz, Intel UHD Graphics Comet Lake GT2 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU. anettdc Posted December 11, 2019 Author Posted December 11, 2019 Thank you all for responding! I'm leaning towards the Surface. No need to reinvent the wheel with and iPad. But I might stand by and save up for either the 128gb version of the Go or maybe even the Pro. My laptop is old, but instead of upgrading that, just get one of these. Again thanks for taking the time to respond! Quote
