Is there a way to “lock transparency” or “alpha lock” on Affinity Designer iPad

Recommended Posts

Hi,

The black box is a layer and the purple box is another layer. I am trying to find a way to limit my drawing only affect the area that the black box is covered.

For example: If I create a rectangle, the top part will not show (ref to attachment 2).

(Similar to the Alpha Lock in Procreate)

Thank you!

Clip the pink layer onto the black layer so only the pink on black shows. :)

I also have a question in relation to 'Alpha lock'. I have Affinity Designer on iPad. I also use Procreate which has a facility called Alpha Lock that enables me to add colour to only a selected area - this means that once alpha lock is applied to a layer, you can only paint inside what already exists on the layer. It enables you to scribble away with your finger or pencil and the colour is contained within the lines.  Can I do this with AD?

Thanks

Using same method as Dave mentioned above, automatically clipping to a layer, you will see the message appear as I scribble. Any layers locked won’t be affected by any edits. There are other methods as well. See Selective Colour in the help also the use of selections which can also restrict edits.

In pixel mode, AD has a protect alpha setting that will also do what you want. Rasterize any vector layer you want to work on, select a Raster/pixel based brush, turn on Protect Alpha in Context menu and paint on the pixel layer. Unpainted areas on the layer will be protected.

How do you do that on the desktop app? There's no clipping or alpha lock for that

This is done using the same method for desktop, simply drag an drop the layer into the layer you want to clip the object to. You can find out more regarding this here -

https://affinityspotlight.com/article/understanding-clipping-in-affinity-apps/

In regards to the 'Protect Alpha', this option can be found on the Context Toolbar, with the Paint Brush tool selected in the Pixel Persona -

I hope this helps!
