Are the affinity file types public?

Recommended Posts

Can other programs export to .afphoto .afdesign .afpub ?

Adobe's .psd file type is public but their .ai file type isn't. Really sucks too because so many people use .ai like it's the standard even though it's exclusive to adobe.

No. The design of the Affinity files (it's all one format, by the way) is proprietary to Serif, @kjs.

By the way, Adobe PSD isn't really fully public, either. Some aspects of it are documented, but some aspects aren't and are proprietary. That means that anyone wanting to handle those aspects needs to do a lot of experimentation to reverse engineer the details of the format. And then the details may change with the next Adobe Photoshop release, and may again be undocumented, requiring further discovery and reverse engineering.

I believe that's why, so far, the Affinity applications cannot export PSD files with editable text, for example. Aspects of how to do that are not documented by Adobe.
