Rolbrecht Posted December 5, 2019 Posted December 5, 2019 Hello, I am working with large file sizes, e.g. 200 MB to 1.3 GB (TIFF). Currently, I am working on a file that started (one base layer) with 250 MB. During the working process the file size increases around 1.5 GB up to 1.9 GB. Now I have 17 layers (containing picture segments of the base layer) and 20 spare channels. Some layers have adjustment layers, the majority are rasterized. During the working process AP becomes less responsive, e.g. when adding an adjustment layer, its icon is dark. It turns white after a longer period of time (1 Minute or longer). When I keep working, adding layers and adjustment layers, AP suddenly freezes for shorter periods and eventually doesn’t recover anymore. Other Windows applications still work. The attached picture shows a freeze status, that I terminated after 10 Min. During the freeze period, the CPU is still working, however, only on two of 12 cores. I don’t know if this behavior of AP is actually a bug. If not, I would like to know what the maximum file sizes of .aphoto are (could not find anything on the Internet) and hope that data management will be improved on later versions of AP. Thanks for any responds Quote

Staff Gabe Posted December 6, 2019 Staff Posted December 6, 2019 Hi @Rolbrecht, Can you please try the same workflow in our latest beta and see if you notice any improvements? https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/34-photo-beta-on-windows/ Quote
Rolbrecht Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 Hello Gabe, Summary: AP 1.8 works more stable than AP 1.7.3 but crashes during the save process. Details: The starting file size is 1.96 GB (AP 1.7.3). After opening the file with AP 1.8 and saving it under a different name, the file size dropped to 1.69 GB. This file could not be opened with AP 1.73 due to new features. I applied a lot of changes, added layers from selections, added all kinds of adjustment layers, added some life filters, applied sharping and more. The file size went up from 1.69 GB to 3.5 GB. Still no crash of AP 1.8. (See Icons Issue below) Then I rasterized all layers to get rid of the many adjustment layers. I expected the file size to drop (as I know from Photoshop). Instead, the file size went up to 5.4 GB and the saving process crashed, AP 1.8 closed down. After relaunching AP 1.8 it came up with a recovery message (see attached file). I saved the recovered file and its size was 3 GB instead of 5.4 GB. (That made me curious.) I tried to open the crash saved file (5.4 GB) in parallel to the recovered file (3 GB). However, that blocked both files in AP. They were not selectable. Finally, I could close both files. Then I tried to open both files again and it worked. I applied some little changes to the crash saved file and saved it again. The file size stayed at 5.4 GB. What I find surprising is that I could not identify a difference between the recovered file (3 GB) and the crash saved file with 5.4 GB. I wonder what the content of the 2.4 GB data is? The feature “Save document with history” is not activated. When I did a Merge Visible on both files and deleted all redundant layers, both file sizes dropped to 1 GB. Is it correct, keeping Parent Layers with their attached Adjustment and Life Filter Layers results in a smaller file size than keeping the Parent Layers rasterized? Icons issue: After a long period of working and increasing file size the icons of added adjustment layers started to stay dark for increasing time like with AP 1.73. However, saving the document solved this issue. Is this to detailed information? Oval 1 Quote
