Duplicating appears to work best, so,

  1. Duplicate (Cmd + J) the layer 10x
  2. Right click on the top layer and select Merge Visible
  3. Delete the layers below the top layer.
  4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 again
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 3 again but on step one do it 5x

It did sharpen my hand drawn letters but they got so fat by the end of it. I could not figure out how to get them back down to the thickness I wanted.

So I ended up erasing around to get that. But I can't keep doing that!

Sounds like your situation is a bit different. I'd make a new post and explain what you want to do or are trying to do.
