Update Error! Affinity Photo can't be updated, because it was opened from a read-only or a temporary location. Use Finder to copy Affinity Photo to the Applications folder, relaunch it from there, and try again.

I have had Affinity photo for a couple of months now.  I purchased Publisher and Designer this evening.  While attempting to link the programs, I received a messages stating I needed to update Photo.  I clicked on "Check for Updates" and received the following message:

"Update error!  Affinity Photo can't be updated, because it was opened from a read-only or a temporary location. Use Finder to copy Affinity Photo to the Applications folder, relaunch it from there, and try again."

The dmg file was already in my applications folder.   I move it to downloads, still receiving the same error message.  I uninstalled (permanently deleted) the app.   I logged into Affinity to begin from scratch with a fresh download.  The download populates into the "download" folder.  With my initial install, I moved it over to the applications folder.  I am able to use the application but am not able to update Photo.  I tried moving it to the applications folder.  I tried deleting and reinstalling.   I copied from downloads into apps folder and opened from there again. I am still receiving the same error.  I googled this error message.  I am not able to find a solution.  Please advise.

I am running on a MacBook Pro 2018, Mojave 10.14.6, 185 available gigs so not a capacity issue.  Affinity photo 1.7.3.

I am having the exact same problem with the Update Error.  I just purchased Affinity Photo today, I have also installed and uninstalled the program 3 times. Have tried the same things BReye has tried.  Not able to fid a solution.  Please advise.

I am using an iMac running Catalina OS.  Have over a terabyte of space.  Download Affinity photo 1.7.3

Hi BReye, icetsarina,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
The Affinity Photo application wasn't correctly installed. After you download the DMG file to the downloads folder, double-click the DMG (disk image) file there, then drag the Affinity Photo app icon from the left  in the window that will open over the Applications folder icon on the right, on that same window. This will copy/install Affinity Photo directly to the Applications folder on your system. When the copy process finishes close the DMG's window clicking the red circle on the top left corner and eject it from any Finder window. You can then delete the DMG if you want since the program is now installed in the Applications folder (or keep it stored anywhere for backup purposes). Do not copy the DMG file to the Applications folder - this is not the application itself but a disk image containing the application to be installed). See the animated GIF below showing the whole process:

install_from_dmg.gif

Another way to install Affinity Photo from the DMG (disk image) is to drag the Affinity Photo application icon directly to the "real" Applications folder (not over the Applications folder icon on the right inside the DMG's window).

MEB,

Thank you so much!!!!  This worked.  I appreciate the animation as well, it was extremely helpful.  I would have never known the app was not installed correctly as I have been using it without issue.  I will do this for Designer and Publisher as well.

Thank you for the warm introduction as well.  :-)
