th_studio
Hi there! I've just purchased Affinity Designer today. But seems like Show Special Characters is missing. Or maybe I'm not able to find it. Could you please help me finding this option? Many thanks! Have a nice weekend! Best regards Tamzid
walt.farrell
Designer doesn't have that option, and unless you created that document in Publisher and turned the option on there, Designer shouldn't be showing those special characters. That happened to me once, and I don't remember what I did to reset it. Sorry. carl123
From Designer Use File > Edit in Publisher Switch off "Show Special Characters" (in Text menu) Use File > Edit in Designer to return to Designer th_studio 1 Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. h_d
If you create a Publisher document, save it while Show Special Characters is checked in the Text menu, and then open it in Designer, it will as @walt.farrell says display special characters, which is not normally a feature of Designer . As far as I can see, the only one way to reverse the process is to close the document in Designer, re-open it in Publisher, turn off Show Special Characters and then save it again before closing. The next time you open it in Designer, the special characters will not be displayed. th_studio 1 Quote Affinity Photo 2.0.3, Affinity Designer 2.0.3, Affinity Publisher 2.0.3, Mac OSX 13, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel. walt.farrell
The weird thing is that I had Designer showing them even on new documents. Not sure if the setting carried over from a Publisher File that I had open one time, or what, but it affected all my Designer files for awhile. th_studio
This is so weird and funny!!! Why Affinity Designer has to depend on Affinity Publisher to show/hide special characters? This made me both laugh and cry
h_d
It would be much better if AD. had a command to display or hide them. walt.farrell, Old Bruce, A_B_C and 1 other 4 Quote Affinity Photo 2.0.3, Affinity Designer 2.0.3, Affinity Publisher 2.0.3, Mac OSX 13, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel. If AD can show them, the UI ought to have the means of toggling them on/off. Serif could easily make AD simply not show them regardless the view state in APub. However, In every application I use, there are good reasons to be able to toggle them on/off. That applies to AD, too.

For all the features of all Affinity applications there will be good reasons to use them. And Serif would definitely be able to create one cool app for $ 150. We're not talking about including actual functionality, rather being able to control a view state that, without a UI toggle only serves to alienate users. So fine. Serif just bought to shut off the display of such a thing in AD if it is superfluous.
A_B_C
I bet this is just an oversight. Should be reported as a bug.

A_B_C
The oversight lies in the fact that you cannot hide (or show) special characters in Designer, i.e. that the menu entry Show special characters is missing in Designer or that special characters are enabled at all. It would be ridiculous, if that wasn’t just an oversight. I am going to report this as a bug, and we will see. Here you go.

FWIW, the visible special characters do not print, nor or they included in any of the exports to supported file formats, so they might consider this bug to be primarily a cosmetic one they are not going to invest a lot of time in correcting any time soon ... unless a lot of users complain about it. But having them visible all the time is quite disturbing. Is it really hard for the developer/programmer to add Show/Hide Special Characters option under Text menu? As such things go, I find that far less disturbing or annoying than for example the low contrast backgrounds behind tool & toolbar buttons in the Dark UI display mode that makes it difficult to tell at a glance if a button is enabled or not.
