Editing hidden layers (e.g. with brush, eraser)

I agree, I just found the same issue. I selected an area to delete but I was on a hidden layer and removed the content. After hitting Crtl-Z the content was back but in the small preview area of the layers, the area still seemed to be deleted. Only closing the file and reopening it refreshed the preview.

Locking simply stops the user from being able to transform the layer, so you cannot move or resize it—but you can still draw on it. This has been discussed countless times and this is just the way we've decided to do it.

Hiding a layer still allows you to draw on it and transform it. This helps when you've got multi-selection of hidden and visible layers that need to be moved or transformed.

I don't know why we've lost the convention but a convention doesn't necessarily mean that it's the right way to do it—it's just what people are used to. We know we're different.

I understand that hiding a layer does not lock it from being transformed, makes total sense to me, since it does happen from time to time that you would move a bunch of layers, or scale them etc. and do want the same transforms on (temporally) hidden layers.

What I really don't understand however is in which case drawing or erasing on a hidden layer would be desirable. I honestly cannot think of a situation where someone would want that (though that ofc doesn't mean nobody else could. So please let me know if I'm missing something here :) ).

Therefore I still think an option to change that behavior might be a good idea? Or as I said, maybe at least a warning when trying to draw or erase on a hidden layer.
