GarryP
I know this is a tiny issue but it’s been bugging me for a while now. Normally, an ellipsis at the end of a menu item means that a dialog will appear to give the user some options for that function. However, I’ve noticed that the “Rasterise” and “Rasterise & Trim” menu options both have an ellipsis after them but they don’t seem to have a corresponding dialog (I’ve never seen one and one isn’t mentioned in the Help). Are there situations where a dialog will appear, or should the menu items have the ellipses removed? It’s a little disconcerting expecting a dialog but not getting one. It makes me think I’m not doing something right. Pšenda
carl123
Try Rasterising a pixel layer that has a shadow FX applied Pšenda 1 Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. GarryP
Ah, there’s the little fella. Thanks car123. I think this should probably be mentioned in the Help, on the “Rasterising” page, just so more people can know about it; otherwise it looks a bit odd. I’ve included a screen-grab so people can see what you get without needing to replicate it themselves.

Personally, I think that this type of dialogue might not even have ellipsis. As an example, I would mention the Exit item, which also does not have ellipsis, but sometimes (depending on whether or not a file is in progress) a dialogue follows - save query. Ellipsis belongs behind Export, SaveAs, Print, etc., because they are followed by a complex setup dialog always. GarryP
I agree. Menu items should display an ellipsis if there is more user input (and/or confirmation) required, and not display an ellipsis if the action will be immediately performed with no extra input. Therefore the menu items should be ‘content aware’, changing themselves depending on what they will actually do, thus giving the user more of an idea of what will happen next. To quote the Windows guidelines: “The visual cue offered by an ellipsis allows users to explore your software without fear.” (my emphasis on “without fear”) Some slightly old – but still relevant – Windows guidelines can be found here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/uxguide/cmd-menus#using-ellipses
