In all three of the Affinity apps go to View > Studio > and check that Layers is check marked. I am just guessing here by what you mean by "... the rectangle box...", I use Mac so it may be different for you if you are running Windows. You may have closed the main Application window or you may be using Separated Mode (Window > Separated Mode) toggle that off if it is checked. What do you see when you make a new document?
