[AP] CPU load through the roof with 700+ px brush?

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow Affiniteers

Is it just me or does Affinitiy Photo not know how to handle large brush sizes?

I have a 32GByte Ram, overclocked i7 4950k.
I am used to working in panorama photo's of a minimum of 20k*30k px, brushing up alpha channels with 1000 px large brushes in multiple layers (15 or more). All that without my desktop giving a freckle about it.
However I find it utterly impossible to do in AP. Even in a single layer. single alpha channel image of just 3k*4k px and a 700 px brush. The CPU load goes to a whopping 95%, everything freezes and the screen is updated once every second. Absolutely killing my workflow.

Am I the only one? Or does someone know a trick for this, because this is going to be a deal breaker for me.
I have tried working with gradients alone, but that I can't get the same freehand result with that..

Hi WOEHAA :)

This has been reported previously and is due to Affinitys live rendering of brush previews, unfortunately with large brushes (700px+) the brush preview rendering does cause CPU usage to spike as the application is updating a large number of pixels multiple times a second this requires large computational resources.

Our recommendation to combat this is to disable the brush preview - meaning unfortunately you won't be able to see your stroke before applying it, however you should find your performance is increased. You can find this setting under Edit>Preferences>User Interface, then untick Show Brush Previews.

We hope to improve the performance of this in the future, specifically utilising GPU hardware acceleration, which is currently under development on Windows.

I hope this helps!

Okay, so I revisited this question of mine. This is after the newest update of AP of which I was hoping that would have fixed this.

Unfortunately, no it is not fixed. It is still impossible for me to retouch photo's with a brush larger than 50px. And even then I get a maddening amount of banding in the brushstroke. I tried it with 500px even a 100 pixel wide brush, but they all are useless to me.

I have been editing photo's since 1996 and know what it is to struggle with hardware and software limitations. But this is completely new to me.
How can it be that my overclocked i7 4790k is running 100% load and still AP produces crappy brushstrokes? While in Photoshop I can work with 30k*30k pixel photo's with 8 layers and still be able to draw perfect, smooth brushstrokes?

Am I the only one having this issue, because if that is the case then I'll shut up, take my loss and pay my hostage fee to Adobe like before.
