Petar Petrenko
Hi, Symbols work fine if, in this case, an "(EXAMPLE)" layer is selected. But, if I select a "(Symbol)" layer, I can't rotate, resize and skew them. Also, when playing with "Detach" and "Sync" I can't synchronize the symbols any more. firstdefence
If you select the symbol layer you will edit that individual instance of the symbol, if you select any of the child layers of the symbol layer you edit every instance of that symbol. You can have grouped elements like the group head that includes the group eyes, ears, nose and mouth so that editing multiple child layers is easy. That's OK, but why in parent layer some options are active and some not, and in the child layer all options are active? Actually my first reply is correct to a point, so it looks like from a transform perspective using the parent symbol layer it's on an individual level and you can change shear, width height, rotation etc but change the colour and all instances change colour and all child layers change colour, same with adding a stroke from the parent layer. dutchshader
yes i did, and this is why you can rotate a symbol by selecting a parent layer and transform by selecting the child layer. and i thought that that was the question. and if not then i totaly misunderstood. Is that not what i did in the gif? Sorry. On closer inspection of the gif in a larger window I do see now that is indeed what you did. I am also sorry that it took me longer than it should have to understand why I was not seeing the same thing in my tests. But I did eventually figure it out: in my tests the symbol's children had children of their own, & in that case changing the stroke or fill attributes of the parent symbol does not affect its child layers. Attached is symbols test.afdesign, a simplified version of one of my test files. It has two symbols, each with two instances. They look identical but the symbol named "Nested" has the curve layer nested in the rectangle, while the "un-nested" one does not -- the curve is just stacked on top of the rectangle. If I have this right, if you test with this file or others with similar layer structures, you will also see that the behavior differs depending on if the symbol's children have children or not.
