Good morning (here in NE USA),

FirstDefence, here is a minimal screenshot. It helps prove that dutchshader was correct, this  was in Publisher, not in Designer. Sorry, late at night and I was experimenting with opening Designer from within Publisher and got lost. This is a very helpful forum, thanks to you guys!

I still have a question. Will frame design tools be available in Publisher soon, or is there an outside app I need to get hold of to enable these tools?

Thank you very much for your replies.

The tools are enabled already, James. Their icons are simpy gray.

Just select the tool and drag out the shape you want on a page.

This should be an incentive for their adjustment and coloring. The fact is that in the neighborhood of colored icons and the fact Gray = disabled, it can be unnecessarily confusing.

It can be confusing but there is a difference between a grey button icon & a greyed out one, subtle as that difference might be. Also, as far as I can tell, Tools panel buttons are greyed out only when no document is open; otherwise all of them always are enabled.

Besides, at least in the Mac Affinity apps there is a "Monochromatic iconography" option in Preferences > User Interface, which makes all the buttons in both the Tools panel & Toolbar a monochromatic grey. Even without that option enabled, there are already several grey Tools panel buttons like the text & crop ones, & the panel is customizable, so neither greyness nor how near buttons are to each other really implies anything.

I am glad, that "you" orientate in it. I also have no problem with that - because I know what you're writing here. But for a complete beginner, is color inconsistency "unnecessarily" confusing.

For example:
