affinity photo brushes disappeared

Recommended Posts

Hello community,

Not sure what happened, for months i have used many brushes in affinity photo and have added tons as well.

Suddenly noticing, there are only default brushes left. All my brushes have disappeared.

Help very much appreciated.

Thanks

Gyan

Hi gyan1 :)

I'm very sorry to hear this! Could you please confirm for me:

  • Have you recently reset your Affinity app for any reason?
  • Have you recently updated your OS?
  • Do you have a third party 'cleaner' app installed on your PC that may have moved/deleted the files?

I'd like to investigate what may have caused this here, for this I'm going to need a copy of one of your Affinity Photo .propcol files.

Please open Windows Run (windows Key + R) then paste the following string and press OK:

%appdata%\Affinity\Photo\1.0\user

In the window that opens, please select raster_brushes.propcol and attach a copy of this file here for me. Many thanks in advance!

Many thanks for your file Gyan, I can see that besides the default categories there is currently one custom category called 'Skeleton' in your brush file - are you expecting to see more than this one category?

Thanks for confirming that, I can see in your previous post history that in the below Photo Bug thread my colleague Gabe recommended renaming your app data -

Did you follow this step? If so this will be why you can no longer see your brushes, as they will be in this old folder. If you have the renamed folder, navigate to the same folder location from above and copy raster_brushes.propcol from the old app data to the current one.

I have just looked at the brushes available and found Inksy Street Art2 which I imported but all the other categories are blank.

This may explain why the other fbrushes are missing as the date on the propcol file is 12 th November the day I installed it.

The others are missin.

The size of the file seems small too.

Hi peter 949,

No problem at all, could you please provide a copy of this .propcol file for me?

Thanks for your file Peter, I can see that in your Explorer screenshot the file is 34,380KB which is certainly larger than the default file (11KB) and therefore should have custom brushes included.

Unfortunately however when downloading the file you've provided, this downloads as 13,900KB. After importing this into my AP app data, then launching the app, the file is actually overwritten with the default file - indicating a possible corruption.

Could you please try zipping up your file, then uploading it to the following link for me? Hopefully if I can receive the full version of the file we may be able to restore your brushes.

I have found that brushes appear if I change to photo mode in Publisher. I have access to all the basic brushes but not those I have installed later. However these later brushes are available if I load Photo as a single app. but not the standard brushes. How odd is that?

Not at all odd, actually :)

Settings and resources are not shared between the Designer application, the Photo application, and the Publisher application. If you have installed additional brushes in the Photo application and want to use them in Publisher you will need to install them there, too.

Disappointingly I have had no response to my problem.

I understand that the brushes  have to be assigned to each individual app separately. But how is it that I have no default brushes in Photo when using Photo alone except some brushes I downloaded and installed (Inksy Street Art2) whereas when I use the Photo persona in Publisher I have the Default brushes but no Inksy Street brushes.

Should I rename my raster brushes propcol file and down load or update Photo hoping that the default brushes reappear?

Advice please.

Actually, you did have a response from Serif (Dan C). Did you provide your existing file zipped to the dropbox link that he provided above on Dec. 6?

Apologies Peter, I can see you uploaded the file on the 23rd of Dec but unfortunately I don't receive a notification for this upload so I was awaiting your confirmation.

I've downloaded and unzipped your .propcol file, then installed it into my version of Affinity, which shows me the following brush categories (all of which are populated) -

Is this not what you're seeing in your version of Affinity Photo?

As explained above by Walt, the apps don't share brushes, meaning you need to install your Inksy Brushes into the Photo Persona of Publisher, as well as Photo if you wish to use them here.

Removing this file will generate a new version of the propcol when you next launch the app - which should contain all the default brushes but will have none of your custom brushes retained. Updating the app won't affect this file, but we recommend always using the latest version, which is currently 1.7.3.

Apologies for not realising that you would need notification of the sent file. I am a Dropbox newbie and assumed you would receive one.

I see the same as you in brushes but only Inksy Street art is populated.

I shall rename the file and give you feed back on the consequences.

I have the latest version 1.7.3.481

No problem at all Peter, thanks for letting me know.

I recommend resetting your app to default settings, as uninstalling & reinstalling the app will not affect these files.

You can reset your app back to its default settings by holding down the CTRL key while launching the app. When the Clear User Data window appears, click Select All and then Clear. The app will now open.
Be aware that resetting your app back to its default settings will lose any custom settings such as keyboard shortcuts and brushes etc. To backup such settings before resetting the app, please watch our Affinity - Exporting User Settings and Keyboard Shortcuts video. https://player.vimeo.com/video/189596577/
