Placing afdesign into publisher - publisher crashes

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Publisher beta 499

When placing the attaches afdesign-file (linked) into a (new) publisher file, it is impossible to save that publisher file any longer.
Publisher stops working - killing by task manager is necessary.

Other (maybe more simple) afdesign files do work well ...

This did not happen on previous beta versions!

P. S. I opened a 16-page brochure (made with the previous publisher beta version) which includes this image (among many others) in V 499 - I could save it as a new publisher file.
Next I opened this new file again and replaced that linked afdesign file with the same one (again linked) ... saved that publisher document is no longer possible. Publisher stopps working.
Open and saving the afdesign file again in designer did not change that behaviour.

What could be the problem?

Hi Pauls,

I used publisher beta 1.8.0.499.

Regarding the Designer file I used both Versions (Designer 1.7.3.481 &  1.8.0.486), but I'm not shure anymore, which one I uploaded (this mitochondrium file made me crazy from the beginng, derived from unknown source/shutterstock, converted to an ai. file - converted to an afdesign file ... I had to correct in afdesign from the beginnig. Nevertheless  I uploaded a "clearer" sample file below!)

Anyhow I was facing big problems when placing different afdesign-file into publisher 499.
First I used an brochure of an older pub version.
Seemed to be ok .. or I could not save this file ... or not open it again !?!
At the beginning as soon I used the collect button in the resource panel, publisher created all files into the sub directory, correctly,  but I could not save this publisher file any longer - or, pub could save it, but got stuck after opening that file or it could not be save then ... a little bit of random behavior.

After testing deeper, I gave up to go further with 499 (even so many interesting improvements are in this version).
The stuck problem was getting so extremly that I gave up (ok, most of the testing are from converting pub files from previous pub files).

Some older afdesign files could be opened in the newest designer version and saved as a designer 1.8.0.486 file .. and they can be used in pub 499.
But stilI I experienced stuck pub .. more randomly ... not on all files ... not always ... trying open several time, it worked, sometimes not.

By testing I can say, as soon as I place e.g. the attached designer file ("allocation ..." which was re-saved into 486 designer version) into publ 499, publ getting stuck, when trying to save.
Pub says "saving" but never comes to an end .. stuck (I tested this now again, it consistently failes.)

Hi Pauls,

the following concerns not to publisher directly, rather to Designer ... its about the "mitochrondrium" file mentioned above.
But I write it here in conjunction to that what you have logged above.
As the original file is under shutterstock license I would prefer to upload the file not in public.
Do you have an upload link (if someone wants to look into).

The orignal file is an .eps by shutterstock.
1. When opened in Illustrator, it looks ok, can be saves as an obvious correct .ai.
2. When trying to open it in any designer version (incl. the newest beta), designer is getting stuck.
3. Trying to open the created .ai file in designer, it opens in designer now, but displays it in a wrong way (or whatever it is).

I'm not concerned about this file (eventually I could manage to correct it), but still there must be something (Illustrator open its correctly, designer can't and crashes).
It could be possible, that more such files will have such a problem .. it also could be the reasons for the above "placing in publisher" problems!? But I don't know.

Hi Pauls,

thanks for looking deeper into it.

I think too, its a problem with the original .eps files. I have more of them.
(My main client - in the medical field -  "loves" shutterstock medical image  - it seems that some specialists in medical drawings are selling all their stuff via shutterstock. But I have no idea, which program they are using for creating them.)

We have made fixes/improvements to this area (placed designer file prevents saving) of the program in the latest Affinity Publisher beta. If you would like to try these changes the beta software is available in the forum posts listed below. Once Affinity Publisher has been through a full beta process the change will be released in a future free 1.8.0 update to all customers.

The 1.8.0 builds are in links at the top of these forum posts

Hi Patrick,

you people are very fast .. e.g. I was expecting IDML import (if ever happened) in 1 year or later! :)
I tried it on a rather complicated book chapters (not in detail), even complex made (smaller) tables are flawless there!
Thanks for that (and more ...)

1. Just to mention: regarding this " shutterstock_416026081..." file (s. above), publisher 502 (as well as designer) still have the problem, it's loading but do not find an end

2. The saving  problem of publisher with afdesign file seems to be solved. I found one brochure file, where a logo (afdesign) did not appear any longer in the publisher pages (completly gone), but later I saw, that this logo had some (jumpo ratio when scaling it) problems from the beginning. So I made it new with 1.7. designer, and now the problem didn't appear again.

3. At the moment I'm still struggling with a lot of crashes on publisher 502  (opening brochures which made with previous beta, containing only placed afphoto files, the problem was there on the previous beta, but i thought its only because of the afdesign problem, so I kicked the afdesign files all out now, but still many crashes happen). It could be a home-made problem as well. So I need some time to get clearer about the possible cause.

4. Nevertheless, here is a little repeatable thing on V 502 (see pics below):
a) Create a new file
b) place some images (afphoto, bmp, tiff, jpg ...) onto the page
c) Resource manager: "collect" to a new sub-directory
d) close publisher file and re-open it
e) On a number of pictures (no idea which one and why) only the left upper part of them is displayed (see left picture, while right picture kept in size, in that case they are both 1.7. afphoto-files, but I got this phenomena on tiffs as well.)
f) You have to click on the picture once, than the picture will expand again (second image below)
g) I experienced both: all pictures staying afterwards in correct size - or (this happened once): each time I opened the file again, another click on that frames were necessary.

Would you mind copy pasting this into a new beta thread please, and any other recipes as they appear, thanks
