Publisher linked document layer overrides

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to do layer overrides of a linked document inside of a publisher file? The linked doucument could be an affinity designer or a pdf file. I know i can double click and change what layers are visible, but I believe that by editing the file by double clicking, all instances of the linked file inside of the document will get updated. I am looking for a way to overrides layers of a linked document in just one instance.

I have found that if I copy an placed asset and double click to edit the layers, the layer changes will affect the copy and the original.  So to avoid this, I place a fresh instance of the graphic for each view.  This works fine.  Each 'place' can be edited differently in terms of layer view.

But, if you make a change to the original designer file all the placed graphics will reset back to the saved state of the layers in the designer file, which is a question I have opened on the forum.

There's some danger with that, with the current implementation. Or, at a minimum, you've added another level of complexity that could cause confusion.

If you have Placed an image file (JPG, PNG, TIFF) then when you edit it in Publisher via double-clicking or using Edit Document the changes you make are saved to the original file.

If you have Placed a document file (at least when it's .afpub, .afphoto, or .afdesign) then the changes you make are saved only in the .afpub file, and the original files are not modified.

For me, that does not happen, including for linked files. The original raster format file remains untouched.

For me it works as Walt says

What happens if you close the document with a modified placed/linked JPG file then reopen it?

Because it is a linked JPG does it revert back to the "original raster format file" you say remains untouched?

Nothing happens. In the reopened .afpub file there is no reversion of the placed image to the original JPG, & the original JPG file remains unchanged.

Of course, since the image layer in the .afpub file is linked to the original JPG file, if I edit the JPG file & then reopen the .afpub file, it is updated to the edited version.

So in a sense, you could say the linking is one way, not bidirectional.

Well on my Windows 8.1 PC the editing of linked JPG files appears to be bidirectional not one way

Which leaves me even more confused for the sole reason that I don't know if the developers have designed/meant it to be bidirectional or one way

So I can't tell if my PC app is wrong or your MAC app is wrong

PS I hope it's you, as I prefer it the way it works on my PC :D

I hope it's you, because as Walt mentioned there is a risk of accidentally changing the original raster image file if it is bidirectional. xD

It seems weird that it is one way for you but (apparently) bidirectional for Walt, since from his sig he is also running Windows 10. Carl is running Windows 8.1, so it seems there are several different Windows behaviors, only one of which is the same as what I see on my Mac.

Hopefully a moderator will add a comment about this & let us know what the expected behavior should be, presumably one that is the same for all OS versions & platforms.
