How do I change this shape in Designer

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

I'm trying to learn Affinity Designer and was wondering about how to do something.

In the Emblem Template 07, there is a mountain range with a sunrise over the mountain peak. Notice how the sun is cut out to match the jagged peak of the mountain. (attached image)

My goal is to emulate this style of emblem, but perhaps use a vector illustration of a house or something instead of a mountain. Can someone please point me in the right direction on how to recreate this technique of making the sun cutout match the edge of whatever object I place below it?

Thank you so much.

here's an example of a potential image I might use instead of the mountain. I'm assuming that perhaps the technique is to use node tool and try to manipulate the elements like the sun to match the slant of the roof. The issue for me is the circular color bands--what to do to keep them uniform but work with the house. Hope that makes sense.

Thank you,

Chris

Hello, thank you so much for helping me. I really appreciate it. I apologize for my lack of understanding, but am a pretty fast learner.

Palantino, that's exactly what I'm attempting, but I'm not understanding what the steps are from here (attached screenshot).

I have created the concentric circles, and positioned the house over the circles. I'm not understanding how you got that white diamond like shape to create the space between the house and the circles?

v_kyr, I'm going now to read about compound objects!

Thank you again,

Chris

Palatino basically drew a white shape following the slope of the roofs and dropped it behind the house to mask out the circles. You can also use the same shape to subtract from the circles using the boolean operation Subtract although you would need to replicate it for each circle and subtract from each circle. Compounds are good for single colour objects when you want to retain edibility but until compounds can retain an objects colour compounds are not really a viable option for multi-coloured objects.

This example shows how to remove sections of the circles.

You will end up with this.

Brilliant. I'm able to move forward on this project now. Thank you.

Firstdefence, how long did it take you to master all of this? If I could have 1/10th of your skill, I'd be thrilled.

Like others, I recently ditched PS for Affinity, and with the savings I've experienced, I bought the entire trio of Affinity software products and hope to learn them all! So I'll be back.... lol

This is just great. Thanks.

Just to be clear about the steps:

1. Using the pen tool, trace a shape on a separate layer, and use the slope of the roof as guide.

2. Fill the shape with white, and no stroke.

3. Expand this shape so that that it will block out the circles

4 Position the shape behind the object that I traced

5. Copy the shape, and position it over top of the next circle (or at the top of the layer stack position of the circle I want to cut

Hoping that makes sense? I'm not understanding about the boolean subtract operation. Is this a specific command in the software?

Thank you!

Chris
