I've been trying to use transparent PNGs to add lightweight texture to my artwork. I've tried several different tutorials, and multiple different PNGs. When I overlay them on to my artwork and change the transparency to 'erase' it just turns the PNG texture white. I've tried using the color swatches and pickers to change the color to match the back ground paper, etc. and am still not able to get the desired affect.

This is one of the tutorials I tried and best represents what I want to achieve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUi9KytBRLs

I got the PNG files from Retro Supply Co, I've emailed them to see if I missed some portion of the instruction on how to use the textures. I haven't received a response.

@David Williams83 Welcome to the forum David,

The textures need to be opaque, so whatever you want to turn white must have some opacity and the spaces that don't turn white must be transparent, not opaque and white.

Anything that has opacity will turn white.

You can test this out using this file I created, it was made in Affinity Photo using the texture brush Grunge 4 on a transparent document. If you place this as a texture and use the erase blend mode it will give you the effect you are look for and that can be seen in the youtube video.

In addition to the above if you wanted to isolate a texture to a shape or text you can make that texture a child of the shape or text and it will be clipped, from there you can do numerous things with the texture layer to give all manner of effects.
