Plokhi
The AI support isn't really full - affinity designer only opens files that have the "PDF Viewing capability" enabled PDF viewing capability increases .ai size drastically. I don't use that function, and most of my .ai files won't open in AD
Staff Ben Posted July 8, 2015 Staff Share Posted July 8, 2015 This has been covered on other threads. AI is a proprietary file format, and Adobe does not publish the specification. For this reason, we can only support AI files with PDF streams. You will most likely not find any other third party apps that can open AI files without a PDF stream. In fact, some of Adobe's own apps won't support placement of AI files without a PDF stream. JimGoshorn
@Plokhi - Even if you use the PDF stream, it doesn't come over all that well. The stream doesn't include object names or organization (groups etc). If you can work with AD separately, then it shows promise. If you absolutely need to share Ai files back and forth then AD isn't going to fit your workflow. Considering that Adobe has shared the format for Photoshop, it seems a bit unreasonable that it doesn't do the same for Illustrator (unless they are worried about people jumping ship)
Staff Ben Posted July 8, 2015 Staff Share Posted July 8, 2015 I think they may have been forced to publish the PSD specification. The same currently isn't true for AI. Even then - the documentation for PSD is inaccurate and far from complete. JimGoshorn
So you guys must really have your hands full trying to make your apps PSD compatible. I saw a post today about the multi-fx giving you grief. That 800 pound gorilla isn't going to give up his bananas willingly
