Affinity Photo won’t allow me to re edit my file.

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am a Photoshop user switching to Affinity.

I placed a file, MAP.ai on a new Untitled document. Dragged the size out as I wanted. Clicked EDIT DOCUMENT and changed colours and added colour outline and drop shadow effects successfully.

I can switch tabs above the image, between the original map which has it own tab called <Embedded> and the final high rez image which is called <Untitled> and I can make changes as I wish.

All good!

But when I save the file and then re-open it the image of the Map with its effects seems to be flattened so that I cannot make further changes to the effects I have created. …they are now fixed permanently within the image.

If I was working in Photoshop I could take the effects off or alter their settings as long as I saved the file as a .psd.

I have tried saving with the “save History” setting ticked, but it doesn’t give me access to the effects.

How can I save my .afphoto file so i can maintain its editability? I get a message when i reopen the file that says

“Linked resource changed. ….MAP.ai has been modified outside of the application.”

Any help gratefully received.

AP can open some AI files if they contain an embedded PDF, but it won't be able to save the document as .ai: you'll have to save it as its own format or export it.

If you want to embed and modify a document, first convert it to .afphoto or .afdesigner files. You'll be able to embed and modify those properly.

Thanks Wosven,

Do I need to buy Affinity Designer to convert an .ai to .afdesigner or can that be done within Affinity Photo? Ill buy it eventually as I am moving away from Adobe to Affinity but Id like to master one new app at a time!

Thanks

I think AD, AP and APub import PDF (and .ai files IF there is a PDF embedded in it) the same way. You'll buy it later when you'll need it.

Have fun! :)

You're dealing with an embedded document (the .ai file) in your main document (a .afphoto file, probably, if you're in Affinity Photo). The embedded document is a single-layer object in that file. If you want to change anything about it, you need to use the Edit Document button as you did the first time you made adjustments to it.
