  1. I have a large volume of text I wish to format into 4 columns over a two-page spread. I copied the text out of Swift Publisher, and pasted it into a single column text box in Affinity Publisher, thinking this would be a routine operation. Instead it has turned into an ordeal. As you can see from the movie I’ve attached, when I select the text box and click on the little column adjustment tool, the text does not reflow in anything remotely resembling a logical way. I thought maybe the text block had picked up some weird invisible characters/artifacts in Swift Publisher, so I dropped it into a TextEdit document first and converted it to plain text, THEN copied it into AP. This had no effect whatsoever on the problem. I feel like I’m going to have to retype it from scratch to get what I want, and what I want does not strike me as anything fancy, or complicated, or unreasonable. This looks like a bug to me. Is there a fix? Thank you for your help. Incomprehensible_Text_Box_Column_Behavior.mov
  2. Does anyone know why the red squiggly line appears under the numbers after the dollar sign is used? (when using the frame text box)

    Overflowing Text

I'm a newbie, but have some grasp of Text Box functionality. But this one has me stumped. I can't find any text that is overflowing, and have reworked this several times. It only shows up when I try to save it as a PDF, so wondered if it were a bug. Attached is a screenshot of what I'm seeing.
  5. I have created a doc with a number of text frames in a previous version of the beta. I'm now updated to v1.7.0.162. I have an issue with adjusting the Leading Override whereby the text does not change when the value is changed. It will only jump to between some of the values. I have created a screen video to demonstrate. I have also created a new doc after downloading the latest update and a text frame in this file works perfectly. This is also shown in the video (afpub_bug1) The other problem I am having with text frames is on my existing doc when I drag a frame around the text jumps like it is snapping to certain lines, even with snapping off. Meaning I can never align it to a pixel. In a new doc the text frame moves as expected and can be aligned fine (afpub_bug2). Either I have a setting set somewhere that does this or there is a bug from an earlier version of the beta that's carried itself over into the latest release. When copying the text frames from the old doc to the new one the frames work fine. afpub_bug2.mov afpub_bug1.mov
  6. First post. Greetings! Generally, the folks at Serif should think long and hard if they want to create an Indesign clone, or rethink the way books, brochures etc are being designed. There are some things Indesign does incredibly well, and master pages are one of them. SUGGESTIONS: 1: One thing I like in particular is the ability to "transfer" objects placed on the master page for editing on the page itself via Shift-Cmd-Click. Otherwise one is limited to how the master page has been set up. EDIT: Ignore. I noticed that this is possible as the master page objects become accessible on their own layer. Well done! 1a: The master key objects become accessible on the page through a separate layer, but this then applies to all the pages using that particular master page. One should be able to disconnect the objects from the master page, so that they become independent and editable. 2: Many other suggestions like anchors, improved and automatic text flow between text boxes have already been made. That applies to the master page, too. If I create linked text boxes on the master page, they should become "hot" on the actual page, so that I can just paste long text into it. 3: Another thing is text variables. There are some already, although a bit obscure under Studio > Fields, but they should be made more prominent and extended to allow the user to set up his/her own. 4: What I like about Indesign is the placement of page guides, because I get an input box where I can set the exact location of the guide. Yes, there's the Guides Manager, but that's another window on the screen. It would be nice if selecting or dragging a new guide would show its position right on the status bar at the bottom or somewhere at the top. Indesign solves this elegantly. EDIT: That's solved. A popup shows the exact location. 5: Indesign also has a good if somewhat awkward way of handling tabs, showing a tab bar above the text. Perhaps a fixed tab bar (toggleable) can be placed right ontop of the text frame, so that one can easily place and adjust the tabs, the indents etc. EDIT: That's solved, too. Frame Text Ruler. BAM! Awesome! BUGS: 1: The way adding tab stops works is buggy, and not properly thought-out, although the idea of incrementing it has merit. The preset (in my case 10mm) is only applied the second time. The first one is still the old setting, in my case 8mm. The question is whether this should be relative or absolute needs to be answered, because if I put in 8mm, I mean 8mm, not 8mm from the last tab stop. Perhaps it's better to add a second button for this purpose. EDIT: The bug with the wrong units ONLY applies to a manual input/change of the unit. If you click on the arrows, all is fine. 2: Please have a look at the Guides, because I had created one, but that didn't show up in the Guides Manager. Only after selecting it, it became visible in the Guides Manager. That's just a brief feedback after installing Publisher last night. Can't wait for the final release, and with it the possibility of dumping Adobe's products. Never liked them as a company, although Indesign is a fantastic product. Affinity Publisher is on the right track, and I for instance would pay a lot more than just $45.00 for a finished product that equals or surpasses Indesign. Cheers, Helmar
  7. Not sure if this is a bug or a user issue..sometimes the red flag indicating that there is more text in a text box appears and sometimes it does not. See video that show the red flag appearing with one text box but not another. Text box.mov
  8. On the .pdf to affinity progs: I transferred an old PagePlus file to .pdf and then into Publisher. Trouble was all my text boxes separated paragraphs and in some cases single lines in a paragraph so that had to be edited singularly. I tried cut and paste into a new text box but it was a nightmare.PP had a WritePlus option where you could edit the whole article. Would be nice in APub. Also AutoJustify was a great feature to make an article fit the frame. I did round off the resulting font-size and spaced accordingly, afterwards.
  9. I had created a text box and I would like to fill it with a color and even change the stroke. If this option already exist it will be great to learn how to do it, otherwise, it can be an interesting implementation because this will avoid an extra layer as a background for the text.

    Widows and Orphans

Lots to learn! Thanks for the tutorials and I do hope some in-depth explorations will be added. Speaking of: Are there any automatic means built in to deal with those poor widows and orphans when linking text boxes, like the other guys "Keep Lines Together" option? I've only been playing around with this for a few minutes, but, so far, so good. I hope to use Affinity Publisher for the Fall issue of our magazine. This will be the app that may finally allow me to stop paying that $53 EVERY month! Thanks!
  11. This is a very tricky bug to recreate. It happens often but not every time when the text box handles are double-clicked. What do I mean about this? Let say you create a text box for a paragraph or verbiage on a document, but the text box is larger than the text you entered, to adjust the text box to match the text length you need to double-click or double-tap the middle bottom handle and this will resize the text box as expected. Similar to Adobe® InDesign™ I'm testing Designer to create documentation for my hosting service, and I'm on my second document, which has more than 40 images, about 10 Artboards (Pages), and lots of text boxes. On the first document, this happened to me once, but cannot compare to the second one. The first one only had about 8 Artboards, about 16 images and a lot of white spaces, which makes me assume that the larger the document the more likely for this bug to happen. Because Affinity Designers is not a Desktop Publishing application, it does not have an option as Adobe InDesign to downsize graphics rendering for low memory consumption. I think this is the only way to recreate this bug. This base on my own assumptions since I'm new to Affinity Designer.
  12. In the screencast there's three lines of text in different setups. None show a cursor when one enters into the text edit mode. This is aggravating. What's the problem here? There's also an issue with the text tool still being active and getting a V added to a line instead of returning to the move tool.
  13. I'd been using an application called Comic Life to make some presentations. There are some nice aspects of the app, but it's a bit tedious - What I need to do is create text containers that will have stroked outlines as well as fill. I know one can make a text frame out of shapes but I can't seem to apply a stroke (or see one) after a conversion. What am I missing here?

    Artboard turns into text box

Using new Affinity Designer v1.6 Artboard turns into text box when using Frame Text Tool Create new document with Create Artboard checkbox selected Select Frame Text Tool and hover over Artboard (Artboard will then highlight) Click on Artboard Artboard then turns into a text box (oops)
  15. Maybe I don't understand symbols properly, but I have this situation: Create a symbol that contains several text boxes. The "Sync" button is activated. Move one text box around inside the symbol. Location or size of the text box is never synched. Kind of defies the purpose of using symbols if it only works for shapes. When I change the actual text (content) of the box inside the symbol, that gets synched, but the size and position of the text box inside the symbol doesn't get synched.
  16. I have discovered an issue when pasting text from Mac Pages and Mac Mail documents. My clients usually send word documents for copy that I view in Pages, and I then copy and paste the text into the Designer document. I noticed that some of the text that I copy and paste is thicker and doesn't print as clearly than some others. It took me a while to find any discernible difference in texts because I could have two different text boxes with the same fonts, including font size, weight, spacing, and stroke, etc. I noticed that in the text boxes that have the slightly thicker fuzzier printing text that the typography buttons for ordinals and fractions were greyed out, whereas the text boxes that were more precise and clear were not. Unfortunately, I was not able to solve the problem easily by clicking the ordinals and fractions buttons as they were greyed out. On the clearer text boxes, these buttons were clickable, but not on the others. I've discovered that this happens whenever I cut and paste something from Pages or Mac Mail (have not tried any other programs but I assume it is with any text that is formatted). I've tried this with a number of fonts, and it's the same issue with any font that I use, so the problem is not with a specific font, it's with pasting formatted text from one program into a text box in Designer. If I paste the copy into Text Editor first and then paste it into the text box the ordinals and fractions boxes stay clickable. The only issue then is that I lose all formatting... clients often send documents with partial formatting that definitely saves time. Can anyone provide some insight into what is happening here and how I might solve this issue? Thanks!
  17. Hi! I'm a very new user, well sort of. I looked through and found a post that sounded similar to my question but I'm not sure 100% of they are talking about the same thing. In indesign there is a feature when you create text, that you can right click on the textbox and fit frame to content. It basically resets the box to the edges of the text if you happen to stretch it out. This is very helpful is you start to align different text boxes on the page. Is there something in Affinity that will allow me to do these without having to manually drag the box back to the edges of the text? I scanned one post and saw a 'command enter' and I thought it did what I wanted but instead it turned the text to curves :D Many thanks!!
  18. As a veteran Corel Draw user, after 48 hours i immediately found Affinity Desinger truly fascianating. Its fast, smooth and im glad Affinity adopts solutions from Illustrator and Corel too, and im expremely happy that AFD is available for Windows already. I would be ready to change my workflow to continue daily work with Affinity only but there are few things i really miss. Please consider to implement these things: - Swatches part1: To me its awfully slow to choose the right colour of fill/stroke to an object. This is what i truly hate in Illustrator too. In CorelDraw there is a very simple way to do that: Palettes are always visible on the right side of the screen - RGB, CYMK or any palettes you want. Left click to fill, right click to stroke. It makes the procedure lightning fast. - Swatches part2: There is no way to work comfortably with swatches (saying as a Corel user). I would love to see them all the time on the side, and use the colour wheel only if its neccessary. Also i really wanna know what colour im actually using on an object. CorelDraw is amazing in that case. See the attached picture. Working with text: In Corel there is an option to move each letter independently in the letter boksz with the Shape Tool. As far as i know there is no option for that in AFD yet. These may seem small things, but it truly fastens the process while working on a complex graphic, without clicking a bunch of times across the screen. If u could make these options available somehow im sure more and more users would be ready to change to Affinity. Thanks and respect for your brilliant work, Dear Affinity Team!
  19. or Is there a way to turn Text Frames into Artistic Text. I am trying to quickly resize the frame to the text. Thanks!
  20. I updated AD yesterday evening, and today text in text boxes has somehow collapsed so there is no line-height. Changing the line height does not affect anything. Restarting the application does not make a difference. This is happening to all multi-line text in my document — on the day I need to export it and supply it to the printer! Edit: I jumped the gun a bit. This is _not_ happening to all text boxes. Just some of them. (Which is just as mysterious to me). And to make this even more fun, new text boxes don't seem to be affected by this. (However, copy/pasting the misbehaving text into a new text box, does not help.) This seems like not-a-bug, but a mistake I may have made without knowing. Is there a character or paragraph setting that does this? Again: Changing line-height has no effect.
  21. I want to create a text box, with rounded corners and a background colour. Some of the text, I want to have different background and foreground colours from the rest. Unfortunately my 10 days has expired, so I can not try this. Thanks mcl
  22. Is there a way to make text inside a text box align to center, as it is now it is aligned to top. Didn't see this feature in paragraph or character panel.
  23. When will it be possible to select not only the first character in a text box as snapping candidate?
  24. Using the text tool, when I want to change the text box, change the width, is the letters supposed to stretch with it? How can I change the text box without it affecting the letters? and is it possible to deselect the text tool without having to click on another layer?
  25. Why does a standard return press give me a double line leading? Should be just a single line, equivalent to leading set. Or are there settings that I'm not seeing?
