  1. It would be very useful to have functions to select the same: Color fill stroke (color / width) Appearance To quickly select all your outlines, or background element in 1 color. Speed is everything. :)
  2. In both AP and AD, I have created a reference layer (1), placed a photo on it, and lock that layer. Another layer (2) was created and is being used to hold elements traced from the locked layer. The problem, I cannot box-select the elements on the second layer if the box begins over the photo on the locked layer. Even though layer one is locked it get selected. I can also just click on the background image on that locked layer and select it, of course, I can't do anything with it once selected...because it is locked. The question: Is there a setting I am missing that prevents the object on the locked layer (or locked object) from being selected? Seems to me that if something is truly locked I should not be able to select it. Thank -Bill
  3. I'm zoomed into an object, trying to outline it w/the magnetic lasso and having problems. 1) How do I scroll the page in order to advance my edge selection around the object w/o deselecting what I've done or having the mag. lasso dutifully create a path out to the scroll bars and back? 2) Is there any sensitivity setting for the mag. lasso's edge detection? Not infrequently, it selects the wrong edge no matter how carefully I try to trace the edge. 3) When the lasso does a bad job of finding the correct edge, how does one sequentially delete mistaken anchor points, to back-up one or more anchor points, and give it another chance to find the correct edge? I originally tried to use the Flood Select tool but I just couldn't adjust it to confine itself the area outside the object w/o picking up all sorts of random areas inside the object. Thanks, lettergothic
  4. In my work in editing a complex geology map I have carefully planned text and graphic layers, e.g., scores of site names are all under one layer, their dot locations are under a different layer, etc., for some twelve layers. Sometimes there are sublayers under these layers. I just completed another complex map with many layers and objects in Illustrator (not yet brought into AD) and noted how quickly my selection of an object allowed me to move it or edit it. Returning to AD I suddenly discovered that after double clicking on a site name, AD had to first select the entire group and then (but not always) it selected the object and often took me inside the frame text even though I only wanted to move the name. Since I work very quickly in the editing process using my convenient keyboard shortcuts, I found that I had to wait and sometimes even start the select process again to avoid moving the entire layer of object or having my shortcut key appear in the text frame. Often I must use esc to start the selection process over again until I finally get the selection I wanted in the first place. Is there anyway to speed up AD's selection process so that it would be like Illustrator, i.e., immediately select the specific object (as a site name) rather than go through the AD process of selecting the group and then selecting the object? That option under Preferences would be a great help.
  5. AD seems to do okay with double-clicking groups to go inside the group (similar to isolation mode in AI), and I usually can get to the object thats deeper than one level, but when I get to that level and I want to select the items in that level I cannot do it with the move tool (which one can mistake for a selection tool I guess) by marquee selecting the objects in that level. I suppose this is due to what I just mentioned, there truly is not a select tool, or a direct select tool.
  6. I am trying to use as less files as possible for comic projects using the same pages (digital/print editions, reprints, trade paperbacks, revised editions, etc.), and I think one of the ways to do this would be to have the option of grouping Page thumbnails into folders, and having a check box beside each page and folder. This way, we could just check the pages to export in a project before exporting it to PDF for example. Would it be possible to have such an option in Affinity Publisher?
  7. The area covered by the tap of a fingertip, and the one of the tip of ApplePencil, are too big, so that it is difficult to select a handle or an object if those are little enough. So the intention to move an object after selecting it, frequently results in changing its size, or viceversa. When "seeing" the area covered by the tap (vía preferences) this is TOO big in radius (I know, its visible size is probably artefactual). The real result is extreme difficulty to either select or resize when you want (in not-so-big objects) Could be problem of System features (iOS) or of Designer features (if is this, then is a bug, or if iOS is guilty is a problem to solve) Emilio
  8. Hiya! So I'm having a little trouble with texture pack vectors when it comes to trying to select vector group. In Illustrator I'm able to select which texture group I'd like and it grabs the entire texture, but I noticed that with designer it groups it differently. For example, half the texture will be in it's own group but the other half of the texture will be combined with a separate group. Sounds weird I know but I've attached some pictures to kinda show what I mean.
  9. When I buy vector clip art with a commercial license it usually comes in the form of an eps file. Usually all the designs are on one "page". I am finding it very time consuming and hair pulling to isolate what I want from that. I can't "draw a box" around it because it selects everything (the whole "page"). Say I bought 20 cats. They are all on one main layer and I want only one cat. Sometimes I can click on something in the layers panel and when that itty bitty dot is selected I can then click on the cat I want and get one itty bitty little dot in the right cat to be highlighted. From there I can "show in layers". Then I have to hold down the shift key and randomly select a bunch of layers (we are talking so many I have to scroll a lot in the layers panel) and hope I got all the cat. Often I don't and then I have to go through the whole mess again. (Yes, I am smart enough to first group what I found that was correct and then label it so I can find that part again). And more maddenly, the entire cat may not be on sequential layers. But my question is, why can't I surround that cat and have it be selected. Even at the highest magnification I can not directly select on the image - it will select the whole page. Why can't I zoom in until just that cat is showing and then click on it to select just a piece of it? Like what someone here told me to do when I couldn't seem to select just one node to move (it was just moving the handles until I zoomed in a ridiculous amount so I could isolate the node itself)
  10. Hi, I am new to Designer so this might be an obvious question. However, I've done a lot of searching and haven't found the answer anywhere. I am drawing and animating a cartoon vine with lots of little branches off the main stem. I want to move nodes on the main stem around and have the branches follow while staying aligned to the nodes of the main stem. First, I know that there is no way to join curves that branch, so I can't create a single curve for my stem and branches. I can use snapping to align the nodes with each other, but then each time I move one, the other node does not come with it. This leads to my question. After aligning the nodes of two distinct curves, when I select the double node using shift + click, it only selects one of the two nodes. This is true even if both of the curves are selected. Is there a key to press or some other way to select all the aligned nodes at the same time? A workaround would be to first un-align the nodes, then select them both, then move them and finally re-align them. This is very inefficient.
  11. I have watched and re-watched the video Clipping vs Masking by James Ritson and am unable to select the mask (child layer) without the layer. Clicking one selects the other. (ditto for a clipped layer) That is not what I see happening on the video as is done at 2:07 min on YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKrQ2BEFWMs This is similar to another question in the forum but the difference is that I don't want to separate the child layer from the layer, I Just want to manipulate each separately. Here is a quote from the other post by webb, "I have a pixel layer (say, Background) and have added a child filter. I would now like to move that child filter up on the stack, but can't seem to select it without selecting the pixel layer as well--both parent and child layers are highlighted and stubbornly insist on staying that way. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen, I don't know what to do."
  12. How do I marquee select inside a clipped group? This would help a lot. I just can't seem to grab the items I need inside the clip to move around. It just won't do it for me.
  13. Hi Love the software, but I am struggling to get this to work consistently. As stated in the help: With the Move Tool selected, drag to draw a marquee around the object(s).* I try to drag select items on the canvas but it keeps grabbing the first item under the cursor and dragging it along instead of creating a marquee. Only way I get this to work is to lock an item and then dragging from there, or start from outside the drawing area. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
  14. 1. In Adobe Illustrator it is possible to turn off bounding box from menu or by using a keyboard shortcut,. This enables one to select an object by one of its anchor points and move the entire object without changing the shape of the object. This is useful and in some cases indispensable for building complex objects or shapes by moving one object by its anchor point and snapping it to the anchor point of another object. Is there any way of achieving this in Affinity Designer? 2. A related question: Also in Illustrator it is possible to select and edit objects within a group of objects and edit the selected object without ungrouping. How can one do this in Affinity Designer?
  15. I am trying out Affinity Photo intensely to make up my mind before I pay for another year of Photoshop. One thing that I'm not quite liking is the selection tools. Though on the tutorials they look amazing but I find that my selections have jagged edges. After fiddling with refining for a good while and then going to the trusty pen tool I had to manually delete white pixels... while in Photoshop the same selection is perfect with the magic wand. In photoshop I expand my selection by 1px.. I tried the same thing here but my jagged edges remain. I'm attaching the original image, then a zoom of the section after I selected with the pen tool and lastly a zoomed out with my image on a black background where you can see the nasty edges... What am I doing wrong?
  16. I'd like to see the ability to position a marquee tool selection while forming it. Similar to how holding down the spacebar while dragging out a selection in Photoshop gives the user the ability to reposition the selection, and then, when releasing the spacebar, continue to shape the selection. It would be good if while in "add" mode that selections are able to be positioned independently as well instead of being treated as one universal selection and moved as one. Matt ------ I explain more about the issue I am describing HERE in this forum post and give an example of when I bump up against it.
  17. In Affinity Designer Beta, I have an EPS vector with more than 1000 icons. I want to drag a selection box around one of them to copy or recolor it. But Designer selects ALL the icons with the Move tool, or individual elements of each icon with the Node tool. In Illustrator, I can easily drag around any icon to select it. How do I do that with Designer? 1111_XXL_set2.eps
  18. I have a collection of stills that look like the attachment, many of them, that have to be altered. Ideally I want to simply get rid of the white backgrounds. Cropping only allows me to use specific square or rectangular shapes. Is there a way I can draw a line around these two (or more) stacked photos, and delete or crop-out the white background? Having the odd shape end result is not an issue. I realise I could make a series of masks, but that seems like it will be a lot of work given I have to do this to scores of photos. All the best, Ben (I've used this forum before numerous times, but had to resign up. I recently had to move, canceled my local internet provider, lost my long-time email address, misplaced my old password, and the new link from Affinity was being sent to a defunct email address. Thus re-signing up.)
  19. When i make a selection, refine the mask and than make a new layer with mask; than try retouch the mask with the brush I get what looks like corrupted data. Is this a bug or what. I have tired installing and reinstalling photo. I am using the trial, I was going to buy this program it looks great but not if this is right. I have attached a screen shot, can anyone help me out.
  20. A map doc I have been working on has many objects and texts (frame texts and artistic texts). I have always very much liked the fact that I could select these by simply pulling my mouse over a unique object or text box. All of a sudden, this feature no longer works. Nothing is selected when I drag my mouse over a unique object or text, even if it is totally isolated from other objects or texts. I have checked my locked and unlocked layers, and they are all as they should be. Another problem accompanies the above. When I double click an object or a text box (even with all of its layers unlocked and all other layers locked), the complete set of objects or texts is selected rather than the individual item. However, selecting an individual object or text box by clicking it in the layer palette still works fine. A third and no doubt related problem is that the usual AD method of selecting a line and the adding a point with the node tool no longer works. The pen tool does not do this either. At times, after working on such a doc for some time, AD seems to "get tired" and certain functions are slower or simply do not work. I have not documented this carefully, but in the past I simply save, exit AD and bring it up again. This seems to solve the problem, which must be a memory overload of some sort. In the case of the problem above (in the first two paragraphs), exiting AD and bringing it up again does not help. I've looked at various settings and preferences but see nothing that addresses this issue. Thanks for any advice available.
  21. With the picture I uploaded below... I was wondering how to remove the part of the rectangles OUTSIDE the circle on the left.. But at the same time keep the rectangle on the inside of the circle.
  22. I am comparing Illustrator text selection to that of Affinity Designer 1.3.2. In Illustrator, if I have multiple text boxes present on the page, I need only choose the Type Tool and the pointer changes to an I-beam, and when I mover that point over any text box, the box highlights with a blue underline. I can then click and drag to select text. And once text is selected that way in one box, I need only do the same thing to select text in another text box. No double-clicking or special text insertion tricks required. No so with Affinity Designer though. In Affinity Designer, if I click the Artistic Text Tool and hover over any text boxes on the page, none of the text highlights. Furthermore, if I try to just click-and-drag atop any text box, AD creates a new text box rather than highlighting text in the existing box! I am forced to double-click to insert the text cursor inside an existing text box in AD. And once there, I cannot simply click-and-drag on another text box to select it. I must go to the trouble of double-clicking to insert the text cursor in other text boxes. It may not sound like much, but this time waster is a huge time waster when you deal with a lot of text editing like me. One more thing. There is a small but noticeable lag when it comes to selecting a lot of text by click-and-drag and even typing text. It feels on order of 200ms or so for text selection, and less than that for typing text. I feel no lag at all when selecting text by click-and-drag or tying text in Illustrator though. This is true in an existing document as well as in a new document.
  23. After creating several layers adding effects, my move tool locks into a pan tool there no way to move and object. I can't even select it by clicking on its layer. The lock is off. I can get it to select with the node tool, but I cannot do anything to it.
  24. Hi, I'm having trouble selecting objects in a document that I originally created in Adobe Illustrator. What am I missing? :) Thanks, Kate
