  1. Hi, I'm trying to explore if my Affinity Photo is good enough for drawing and, while it draws smooth line at the first glance, when I zoom in I can see how the lines are made of small straight lines and it's not acceptable quality in my opinion. It seems like the "read" ratio from the input device is discarded way too much in my opinion. I report this as a bug because other drawing apps I'm testing using the same tablet on the same Mac make perfectly smooth lines (without any smoothing tool enabled within the app). As an example, I share two screenshots of the same text drawn in AP and in Krita just for comparison (I've pointed areas where the issue is more visible using a red arrow): KRITA: Affinity Photo:
  2. Stylus input on desktop (Mac) isn't nearly as smooth as on iPad, no matter what tablet drawing brand you use (I've tried a few). I've brought this up before, and it's kind of a biggie, considering there's a ton of illustrators, designers, photo retouchers/editors, using drawing/graphics tablets for their work. Some some reason this only happens with Affinity apps, and I haven't had this issue with any other graphics software. It's not a deal breaker per se, but it's very notable, and if you use a drawing tablet most of the day for your work, it can get quite frustrating (and could potentially put future users off of using the apps altogether). Furthermore, if you want to compete with the industry leaders (*cough Adobe), then you need to ensure that your stylus/pen input engine is pristine or at least on par with something like the industry standard, Photoshop. For some reason the pressure sensitivity has a tendency to spike or be slightly inaccurate and the lines aren't as smooth as they should be (often with small, but notable kinks and jitter). This is also very notable when using the Freehand Selection tool with a tablet. It's even more prevalent the more you zoom out of your canvas, causing weird jagged 90 and 45 degree angles in your lines/selections - almost as if the pen cursor is snapping to an invisible grid 90/45 degree grid. I usually do not work very zoomed in, so this can get very problematic throughout the work process, causing unwanted kinks and jagged lines which I've never experienced with any other drawing apps. To combat this, I've been using a third party plugin called Hej Stylus (hejstylus.com), and the pen input from my drawing tablet on desktop has been so much better within the Affinity apps while using it. It overrides the apps' default pen input in Affinity and replaces it with Hej Stylus's settings, which are much nicer and more accurate. When using the Hej Stylus app, I keep all the settings at an absolute minimum so that there isn't any additional smoothing, and all the app essentially does is override the default input. I don't necessarily want to use a third party app when working, but I'm doing it out of necessity. I think it's important to note that a desktop drawing tablet is a lot different from an iPad/Apple Pencil combo. The desktop styli/pens act differently and require different settings to perform the way that they should. Perhaps there's a way to get Eilert (the dev over at Hej Stylus) on board to help sort out the stylus input issues in Affinity apps. Sorry to keep going on about this, but as someone who uses a drawing tablet on desktop for ALL my work (as very many illustrators do), I really want to keep using Affinity without any tedious workarounds which takes extra time, and ultimately costs me and my clients money. Really hoping for a fix in the next update!! I've attached a screenshot here of the issue, and also attached the file: HejStylus Test.afphoto
  3. Hi I haven't been able to figure out how to create a sharp corner with the Pen Tool. (See picture). Can you guys help me out: What are the settings for the Pen for making such a corner? Thanks! -M
  4. Is there a way to convert a Pen Tool path you make into a selection. There is a selection from layer I can do, but I would like to just convert the path into a selection, without having to create extra layers.
  5. Hi I'm other applications it is possible to dedicate certain tools to finger gestures. So for instance if I'm currently using the vector brush tool and then draw a line with my apple pen, I can select the line by dragging my finger on the canvas without first tapping the selection tool. This makes the work flow much more convenient and it feels more like iOS than desktop. Please add that to a upcoming release!
  6. Can someone tell me if this software already has the option "Outline" ( see the video) ? I worked with the "trial version" but was not. Thank you!
  7. Hello all I am hoping this is a simple one. Question is, how can I draw a straight horizontal line that is faded on each end?. Drawing the line I can do, fading the ends is the issue. Have searched forums with no luck, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
  8. I was to do something that I assume is straightforward—create a new node precisely at the intersection of the two curves (see screenshot). I can’t figure out how to achieve this, is it possible?
  9. I have been working on graphic novels, which has had me regularly hopping from one persona to another, and using a constant input mix of touch screen, surface pen, mouse and touchpad (version 1.7.2 of Photo, Design, Publisher, on Microsoft Surface Laptop with latest W10). Here are some input issues that I have encountered. - Sometimes Publisher just stops taking drags. Can choose layers, objects or menu items, but can not resize, draw lines or move anything that involves a mouse drag. Restarting the program sometimes helps, sometimes I need to restart the computer. - Sometimes when I use a menu item such as the opacity slider, the program takes no further inputs before I click the slider away, as if the slider was a popup window with priority. - Sometimes I can not select a specific object or menu item with a specific input device. I have found no consistency with this, bus basically I try to click on something and it won't register the input, so I try my options of mouse and touch inputs until I find the one that was somehow required. This feels like a hardware issue for all I know, but has not happened in other programs. - Pasting an image from clipboard creates the layer with the intended image, but I can find no trace of the image on the work area. I resolve this by saving the image and placing it from the file. - Placing an image sometimes doesn't give a preview as I drag the mouse to shape the area, and often resizes or even rotates the image. I found no way to help this but readjusting the image. - Not a bug but there is no touch scroll for the Pages view, this has me regularly selecting and throwing pages about with my thumb. Thanks for the otherwise great programs!
  10. Overall performance is good for me, but there is a lag when trying to use the node and move tools with a pen. The node or object selected doesn't start moving until a *long* time after the drag starts, and in that time the pen is a long way from the original touch point. After the delay, the object or node snaps to the pen position. Things are smooth after the initial delay-snap. Other features are smooth as well. Drawing with the pen for example is perfectly smooth and lag free. I am using a Surface Book 2 with maxed out memory, and the latest version of Designer. Having the base attached or not makes no difference. I tried turning off the "tap and hold to right click" feature in Windows and various settings in the performance tab. Nothing I have tried so far makes a difference. Also note that the CPU is basically idle and I am just trying this with one object. This is super annoying, especially after using my iPad for editing, where the same features are buttery smooth. Even editing over a wifi connection on the Mac with AstroPad is a better experience. Any suggestions on how to fix this with a setting somewhere? If not, are you working to improve this feature? I would like to use my Surface Book more with Designer, but this is a total buzz kill for me. Thanks for an awesome Mac and iPad version. I am really looking forward to a better experience on Windows.
  11. Hello, I am wondering if there is any way to pan the canvas with my finger. I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4, which has a touch screen. I also use Phase One Capture One and Clip Studio Paint. Within both of these applications you can pan the canvas with your finger without needing to change tools. This is a quick and natural gesture, it does not matter what tool is selected and does not require any modification key presses, nor does it require I remove my pen away from its hover state. For clarification, the finger is for panning and the pen or mouse is used for brushing. Does Affinity Photo for Windows 10 offer this feature as I've explained? Is this a feature being looked into for inclusion? Thanks.
  12. The closest I can find in the Help guide is the Pen Tool in either "Pen" Mode or "Smart" Mode, but I'm not very skilled (if anti-skilled were a thing, I'd use that) at using the Pen Tool. Is there a "pre-fabricated" tool like what Illustrator or iDraw has for those of us falling into the "Artistically Deficient" category? ;)
  13. First of all – photo doesn't remember tools settings, as pressure control is always off on startup and you need to turn it on every time you open Photo. Second – it seems Photo has a really hard time with pen pressure, especially when dealing with very light strokes. The line width doesn't change smoothly between values as it is expected to work. I think image explains it better than thousand words: Both pictures were drawn with my XP Pen Artist 12". On both the Brush size is set to 10px. Both brushes have hardness set to 100% with brush size controlled by pen pressure and nothing more (no flow dynamics etc.) yet on Photoshop brush strokes are much smoother and natural looking. I tried to compensate it with accumulation and hardness dynamic, but nothing seems to help. What's the point of having so detailed dynamic options if in the end you can't even have a smooth looking brush? I think this feature still needs a lot of work.
  14. On Adobe Illustrator, clicking end point of another path will attache new path to the another path. How do I do that on Affinity Designer?
  15. Pen Pressure Opacity Settings for (1.7 Update): Affinity Photo/Designer - Pen Opacity Pressure Settings (As of the 1.7 Update): you do not need to adjust Flow or set Flow to "Pressure," to affect Pen Opacity Pressure. - All you need to do (via the Context Menu with the Brush selected) is: 1. select "MORE" 2. choose "Dynamics" 3. adjust the "ACCUMULATION" slider to 100% and select "Pressure" from the drop down. 4. Make sure the "Force Size button" is OFF, via the Context Menu; unless you want your brush pressure to affect both size and opacity at the same time, (which isn't uncommon when used with painting &/or blending). Note: you can also set the size to None via the drop-down menu for size in under More/Dynamics. Note: you may have to do this if you're using custom created brushes, such as some brushes made from Daub. Affinity Photo/Designer - Advanced Pen Opacity Brush Settings & downloaded/purchased Custom Brushes: 5. Advanced Pen Opacity Pressure: under (Brush/Context Menu/More Button/ Dynamics Tab/ACCUMULATION - Set to 100% & Drop Down to "Pressure)" you can also change the "Curve". The best curve to use is the same one for "size." The Curve button is to the "Right" of the Drop-Down menu in the Brush/More/Dynamics tab. Select a curve and try different curve alignments or create your own. The best one or rather for normal one you would expect (as in Adobe PS) is the curve alignment all the way to the Right (which again, is the same Curve used for Pen Size Pressure). 6. Download/Purchased Brushes and Opacity (very important especially for Designer): a lot of brushes already have multiple settings created from those downloaded, purchased or inherently part of Designer. However, older brushes not made specifically for the 1.7 Affinity update may need some adjusting. Flow and Accumulation are the two biggest sliders you must pay attention to if a brush does not behave correctly as it may have in previous additions of Affinity. Example: Daub | Essentials Brush Pack. Some brushes will need tweaking. I suggest coping the brush from the original and adjusting those there in (and Flow), as needed. That way you can save them and back them up as well! Hope this helps – Johnny K PS. Sorry for being so "obvious in my descriptions. I want to be clear with those whom never used Affinity before &/or those coming from Adobe. As I mentioned, Affinity really need to get with the program of adding a "FORCE OPACITY BUTTON" to the context menu as they did for Size and list "OPACITY" in the Brush/Context Menu/More Button/Dynamics with all controls, menus and curve alignments as they do for other brush properties. Kinda ridiculous this hasn't been addressed yet! * I will also try and get photos with # descriptions posted here in asap, if it is requested. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While I'm writing a small book... Dear Affinity, Affinity needs to have a "OPACITY preset, under Brush Dynamics" with the brushes customary controls; Example: Typical settings under Dynamics such as: % Slider / Type (None, Random, "Pressure," ect), for both Photo & Designer. If Accumulation is Opacity (though it acts like opacity, it shouldn't be), then change the name, it's confusing. Pen Size and Pen Opacity are the most commonly used setting and not just for pen strokes! Also... a Pen: "Force to Opacity - Button," as there is now for Brush Pen Size is greatly need also. Perhaps you might want both settings on also; as this is "again," commonly used and it shouldn't be a headache to figure out. Again, Opacity & Size (pen, pen pressure, or mouse), are the two most commonly used brush features/settings needed for brush strokes and much, much more! Right now, is the best time to beat Adobe but, the jumping through hoops, having to write a book in the forums, for one of the most needed settings of a Pen Pressure "Opacity"effect is reDONKulous and kinda annoying! Severely Ridiculous; common guys & girls! BTW... Don't mistake me. I love what you are doing with Affinity, overall. That said, it would be lovely if the new Publisher "Studiolink feature," worked in 3 programs. Designer needs the Channels Palette ... just as Photo needs more brush painting abilities' that are in Designer! Couldn't a channels palette be brought in Designer via the Studiolink feature or simply put in Designer's Pixel Persona. This is another commonly used design feature, missing from your core designer program, (no pun intended)! How & why is there no channels palette in Designer? And if for some reason Designer can't support channels, then Photo needs a serious revamp, so it can Paint more effectively like Photoshop (which to be honest, wouldn't hurt doing so regardless). Photo feels like a after thought compared to Designer, with the exception of missing key elements, already mentioned. With all sincerity - J
  16. I used the pen tool on this program way back when (probably late 2017) and had no problem tracing my sketches into vector art. Now when I alt click a node (in 1.7) it turns the entire line straight instead of just removing one handle. Is this supposed to happen? Because right now the tool is virtually unusable.
  17. The new rubber band mode for pen tool is pretty neat. Draws your path in real time so you can see it before you drop a new point. Helps streamline the process a bit. Great Feature!
  18. Basically, I'm fairly new to Affinity Designers and recently got a drawing tablet. When I use a mouse to use the vector brush tool it is not shifted/wobbly. But, when I draw the same line with my VEIKK A30 drawing tablet it is all wobbly and shaky. I know I don't have the stabilizer on but, I don't like the way it functions. (I know that's how stabilizers work and are behind the point of your pen but, why are they straight when drawn with the mouse.) Below, is a screenshot I took as an example. You can see the pen settings above in the bar so, please if you see anything wrong point it out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but, I see numerous videos of Affinity Designer on YouTube where they are drawing straight lines without the stabilizer on...
  19. Hi all, My name is Andrew and I'm graphic designer of Eurosud Cataldi srl (in Italy). Today I have notice that my pen not work proprely in Affinity Designer only (work very good with Affinity photo and Krita). My pen not cover all the screen in AD and when I go left for select vector brush it jump on right side of the screen. How is possible that few days ago it have worked relly good and now is broken? Can anyone help me please? PS: I have two monitor and all pc driver updated. Sorry for bad English
  20. Hey Guys, for the life of me I can’t produce a dotted line. I select pen, I select dash icon in stroke studio, I set the phase, dash and gap and draw a line. I only ever get a solid line. I can then click on the line and try and adjust. I can see the values, but the line remains solid! One of those things that should be so easy. If it’s not a bug either I’m a fool or some other setting so where interferes. I’ve uploaded the whole doc. You will see the diagonal blue line in question. Really frustrating me! Untitled.afdesign
  21. I've tried this with the current version of Designer & the latest beta. HP ENVY x360 - 15m-cn0011dx Windows 10, up to date Wacom Bamboo Ink Tablet mode Open Designer Create new file Pixel persona Create pixel later, either manually or by drawing and having assistant create it for you. Using pen, drag level to trash can This hangs Designer every time for me. I have to end it with Task Manager. If I'm not in tablet mode, dragging the level with the pen works perfectly.
  22. I'm using Affinity Photo and I'd like to stroke a rectangular or circular (or any other selection) shape. I haven't figured out how to do it… I've made the selection with the rectangular marquee tool. In Photoshop, this operation is really easy but I'm stuck in AP. Thanks for your help.
  23. Dear Affinity-Team! I'm very impressed by the iPad version of your apps. Sadly I do "only" own a Microsoft Surface (Tablet). You can run Affinity Photo and Designer on it but sometimes it is a big pain in the ass to be not able to take full advantage of the power your programs offer. Especially without a cover and a mouse only equipped with the Surface Pen, it is difficult to get buttons right. For that reason, it would be just awesome to have a surface version with all those fantastic features and as intuitive as the iPad version. I hope to hear positive news soon. All the best from Germany. Stefan
  24. I use a Wacom Intuos S, and many times when I go to select a tab on the right things get really crazy. For some reason, taps get registered as drags and the panels get rearranged in all sorts of crazy ways. I have to go and select "Reset Studio" every time. Maybe the solution lies in reducing the drag sensitivity for the panels while using a graphics tablet? Edit: Not the tabs themselves, but actually the drag handle for the panels. My mistake. I added an image for clarification.
  25. Designer 1.6.1.93 Surface Pen right click doesn't work at all, so I have no way to call right click menu with the pen. It slows down everything. Touches are still equal to pen strokes, this is NOT right, please make the app distinguish them from pen strokes, cause each touch paints things and it destroys the experience. Moreover touch can add more functionality by performing operations of for example Move/select tool while you're actually using any other mode, more convenient, more functional, isn't it? Thank you
